The ‘most damning’ part of Jontay Porter’s lifetime ban from NBA

Jontay Porter was the anti-Pete Rose.

Rose claimed he never bet on the Reds to lose, but the NBA announced that Porter, who had just received a lifetime ban for violating the league’s gambling rules, had bet on the Raptors to lose.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said that was the “most abhorrent” part of Porter’s violation.

“Most damning to Porter and the NBA itself. The league’s investigation says he was betting the Raptors would lose.” Wojnarowski tweeted Thursday.

The NBA decided on Wednesday to end the investigation by banning Porter from the league after it was discovered he had been betting on prohibited games.

Porter, the younger brother of Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., also provided insider information, influencing playing time and influencing props.

The league listed all the specific details in a lengthy release, but his betting information particularly stands out.

According to a league statement, from January to March 2024, Porter attended at least 13 NBA games using an affiliated online betting account while accompanying the Raptors or their G League team, Raptors 905. He said he made a bet.

Stakes ranged from $15 to $22,000 for a total of $54,094 and prizes of $76,059 for a total of $21,965.

Porter did not appear in any of the games involved in the bets, but three of the bets were multi-game parlays, including a Raptors game.

A parlay is a bet that requires multiple outcomes for all cash in order to be fulfilled. This increases your odds and gives you a higher payout as all legs have lower odds of cashing out.

All of Porter’s bets resulted in the Raptors losing.

All three bets ultimately lost, according to a league report.

Michael has previously said that he believes his brother would not have risked his career by participating in illegal gambling activities.

“I’ve known my brother my whole life, I know the type of guy he is, I know he’s excited to play basketball, and I know he’s willing to put it at risk. I highly doubt that I would do anything that would expose me to that.” michael said March.
