Navigating TikTok’s Algorithm: Tips for a Better Experience

If you’re going to spend time on social media, you might as well make it enjoyable.

TikTok, along with various other platforms, utilizes what’s referred to as “black box” algorithms. These AI recommendation systems analyze what captures user attention and keeps them engaged for longer periods.

Some say TikTok has one of the most concerning algorithms, driving what many consider one of the most addictive apps today.

The algorithm behind the “For You Page” (FYP) studies user interactions such as likes, shares, and the amount of time spent watching videos. It customizes your feed and can easily lead users down time-consuming rabbit holes.

Essentially, TikTok learns your preferences, focusing on content that resonates with you beyond mere likes. It’s designed to immerse you deeply in what it believes you want to see.

“If you don’t actively guide it, it will guide you,” cautioned some observers.

Content that evokes emotions—whether joy, sadness, or frustration—is what keeps you glued to the screen. That’s the strategy: engage users by making them feel something.

Although these algorithms are pretty much immutable, there are ways to tailor your TikTok experience to your actual interests.

By making some adjustments, you can prioritize posts from friends, family, and reliable news sources instead of random, attention-grabbing video suggestions.

While completely bypassing TikTok’s algorithm isn’t feasible, there are tips to reset and improve your feed experience, as shared by some experts.

To start, you might want to avoid the “For You” page when you first open the app. This page, or the FYP as users call it, is designed to keep you engaged without necessarily aligning with your real interests.

Instead, explore your “Following” feed, which only features videos from the friends and creators you have chosen to follow.

Another suggestion is to “prune” the algorithm, training it to better reflect what you want. Long-pressing on a video gives you an option to select “Not Interested,” helping to filter out unwanted content. Using this feature can fine-tune your feed.

Also, be proactive in teaching the algorithm your preferences. You might want to utilize the search bar to find specific types of content. This indicates to the algorithm that you’re interested in seeing more of that particular content.

Interestingly, TikTok’s algorithm seems to prioritize the duration a user watches a video over their interactions. This means that even disliking a video may inadvertently encourage the algorithm to present more similar content. So, it might be wise to just scroll past videos that don’t appeal to you.

If you’re really looking to start fresh, you can clear all your data to reset the algorithm entirely. To do this, just go into TikTok’s settings, find “Content Settings,” and click on “Refresh For You Feed,” and TikTok will wipe its memory of your preferences.
