Kelsey Mitchell’s Remarkable Playoff Moments

Since 2018, Kelsey Mitchell has been showcasing her skills at Gainbridge Field House.

But this time was particularly noteworthy.

The Indiana Fever standout scored 25 points in a dramatic moment that nearly led to a surprising Game 4 win against the Las Vegas Aces.

With just one more win needed to reach the WNBA Finals, the Fever had to navigate some challenges, including having six players sidelined.

In the crucial Game 4, Aliya Boston emerged as a key player, finishing with impressive stats: 24 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Odyssey Sims also played a significant role, scoring 18 points on Saturday afternoon.

Yet, Kelsey Mitchell has perhaps been the most impactful player during this playoff run. As victory drew closer, Gainbridge Fieldhouse erupted with MVP chants.

“She’s finally got the recognition she deserves,” remarked Fever head coach Stephanie White.

A’ja Wilson, recognized as the real MVP of the league, also had a standout performance, scoring 31 points in a tough loss for the Aces.

Despite Mitchell’s struggle to find her rhythm at times, she played a critical role in the victory, finishing Game 4 with 25 points and four assists. She particularly shone in the first half, where she contributed 15 points, helping Indiana secure an eight-point lead at halftime.

In the professional basketball landscape, it’s rare for players to stay with one team for almost a decade. However, Mitchell has managed to do just that, even with only two playoff appearances since being drafted.

Last year’s postseason for her was brief, as the Fever were eliminated by the Connecticut Sun in the first round.

“She’s been through a lot with this franchise,” White noted, emphasizing her firsthand experience watching the team’s struggles, especially from her previous coaching role with the Sun.

This season, Mitchell is currently the second-leading scorer overall in the WNBA playoffs, averaging 23.3 points. Despite the challenges, the Fever has claimed four victories, though many considered them underdogs. Notably, the team achieved what seemed impossible, reminiscent of the surprising run from the 2021 Chicago Sky.

It’s worth mentioning that those Sky ultimately went on to win the championship that year.

Now, with only one win standing between them and a Finals appearance, the Fever face a daunting task: defeating the second-seeded Aces on their home court in Game 5. Yet, Mitchell remains a pivotal reason for the team’s success.

“She loves the game, she just wants to play, and I’m extremely proud of her,” commented White. “We’re thankful our fans continue to appreciate her skill and that she has chosen to stick with us.”

Indiana fans have been cheering for Mitchell since she was just 21 years old.

Now, they can watch her lead the team, even in the face of injuries during this pivotal moment.
