The NBA All-Star Game was left to total indifference in Indianapolis a year ago. Listen to passive aggression in Adam Silver's voice When he handed out the MVP trophies. Otherwise, meaningless display games suddenly became used as a major example of all the wrong NBA today. Players don't defend! The only shots are dunks and threes! This will never fly in the days of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant!
The NBA has completely remodeled the format as the game moved to San Francisco this year, unable to withstand another embarrassment. The traditional All-Star Game was replaced by an All-Star Tournament, with four teams playing a short game with up to 40 points. One of these teams was the winner of the Rising Stars Challenge at the beginning of the weekend. This means they competed on the same floor as Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
Perhaps the NBA had the heart in the right place by trying to make a more competitive All-Star game, but the end result was a disaster. The 2025 NBA All-Star Game felt more like a variety of shows than a basketball game, stripping away the best part of the weekend for cringe-worthy moments from streamers and comedians. The biggest problem with this year's All-Star Game is that there wasn't much real basketball.
“Mr. Beast Challenge,” and somehow, it appeared in the middle of the showcase of the best basketball players in the world.
A constant start and stop removed the flow from the game. Jason Tatum said it himself. At one point, the game paused, so Kevin Hart could joke at the player's expense, and Shy Gilgaus Alexander was visibly annoyed at roasting him while he was about to hoop It seemed to be doing that.
The All-Star Game should not reflect today's NBA products.
The NBA is amazing right now. If you want to see the league at its best, lock in on this year's incredible Christmas Day slate. Check out Marquee's regular season matchup A thriller between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers leading the conference. With the trade deadline, we cannot touch other leagues in terms of excitement. The playoffs are almost always offered, and in a league that is as open as this year, we are supposed to get a very high level of play this year.
The All-Star Game is an exhibition for fans, and the league needs to remember that. It should not be used as a complaint machine as a stand-in for how the game has changed over the years or as a substitute for what NBA basketball looks like it's in its best. The NBA All-Star Game doesn't have to be competitive as it's not a critical game. In trying to make it competitive, the league still has the most humiliating product ever raised.
This is a small sample of the discussion that took place at the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.
What the National Basketball Association doesn't understand about the fans is that they like to watch basketball.

It's cool to have NBA guys play a bit of basketball during this Kevin Hart special break

I blame Adam Silver more than anyone else for this.

The worst all-star game ever

I want players to take the All-Star Game seriously!!!! So we're starting the final game, but the score is 11-1 to get Kevin Hart to give things to some network show hosts. Sometimes it suddenly stops for 20 minutes

I have been to nine of the past 11 weekends and for some reason this is just being suppressed.

I can't believe how badly the NBA has fanned this

Forget the viewers. This is not really good for players.

Adam Silver somehow made the All-Star Game worse this year. Awful pacing, comments, format. That's all bad.

The reality is that most NBA All-Star games are fairly uncompetitive throughout the history of the league. Players don't want to get injured or push hard in the middle of the eternal 82-game regular season. That's good. Roll the ball there and show up.
The All-Star Game should never have a league in crisis. This year's version felt like a self-harmed wound, but it really doesn't have to be. After all, this is just an exhibition game. If some fans aren't happy with the effort they saw in the All-Star Game, tell them to tune them to the playoffs. NBA products are very good now, and having a terrible All-Star game won't change that.
