“Wake Up Deadman: Knives Out Mystery” Trailer
The trailer for Netflix’s “Wake Up Deadman: Knives Out Mystery” features an ensemble cast including Daniel Craig, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington, and Jeremy Renner. The film is directed by Rian Johnson.
Rian Johnson, who’s earned Oscar nominations, shared that his Christian upbringing played a significant role in shaping his latest Netflix thriller, “Knives Out.” He aimed to create a “movie about faith” that examines themes like belief, doubt, and the church’s influence on American society.
The storyline of “Wake Up Deadman: Knives Out Mystery,” which is now streaming, mostly unfolds during Easter weekend at a Catholic church in upstate New York. It follows detective Benoît Blanc, portrayed by Daniel Craig, as he delves into a murder investigation with the assistance of an idealistic priest named Father Jud Duprentissy (Josh O’Connor).
According to insights from a magazine, both characters face challenges that push them to reconsider their fundamental beliefs.
He expressed, on Netflix’s fan site, that this screenplay was “the most difficult” he’s ever had to craft, largely because of its personal nature.
Although he identifies as non-religious now, Johnson’s experiences in a deeply Christian home continue to resonate with him. He remarked, “I grew up very Christian. I don’t do that anymore, but it was such a crucial part of my life that I have very mixed feelings about it all.”
The film is rich with religious references, including various biblical figures and narratives, and offers a multifaceted view of religious characters.
For instance, Johnson revealed that Father Judd reflects “Christ-like” behavior, while another character, Friar Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), adopts a more divisive perspective toward faith.
“I have strong feelings about faith, partly due to my own experiences and how they intersect with the cultural and civic landscape of our nation,” he elaborated. “I thought this would provide fertile ground for compelling stories.”
Christian Toto, from the Hollywood in Toto podcast, noted that Johnson manages to maintain balance within the narrative. He observed that just like the first “Knives Out” bridged divides that are often overlooked, this film seeks to address religious themes similarly.
Toto emphasized how the director’s complicated feelings about faith are evident throughout the film. While the main character, the priest, communicates in a very relatable manner, Benoît Blanc as the detective portrays a level of respect toward religion despite his own atheism. It complicates the narrative, as some aspects might not resonate with all viewers, especially within the Christian community.
“Wake Up Deadman: Knives Out Mystery” debuted in theaters during the Thanksgiving weekend before becoming available on Netflix.
