Perhaps We Need the Cowboys in the Playoffs
So, I have a bit of a confession. I know some might say it’s a rant, but I can’t help it—I’m really tired of hearing about the Cowboys. Like many who aren’t fans, the constant discussions, arguments, and over-the-top coverage can be a bit much, especially when it seems like they’re always in prime time. I mean, I get it; everyone knows that friend who’s been a loyal fan since they were at their peak back in the mid-’90s.
But here’s something I never thought I’d admit: we kind of need Dallas in the playoffs this year.
Right now, the Cowboys have an 11% chance of making it. Their best shot seems to be winning their games while hoping the Eagles stumble at least twice against teams like the Raiders or Bills. Not exactly the best odds. Yet, I think there’s something compelling about Dallas this season. They provide a kind of offensive energy and quirky fun that’s been missing lately.
This NFL season has been one of the most exciting in recent memory. No team is truly running away with anything; games are closely contested, and the return of strong defense has made things quite unpredictable. However, this league-wide uptick in defensive strategy has, ironically, made the Eagles look pretty dull. Honestly, I ended up watching a Disney+ movie just to fill the time instead of tuning into the Eagles and Chargers game—it felt more entertaining!
Good playoff teams often have a formula: smart strategies, a run-heavy approach, and solid defense. The Cowboys, though? They seem, well, a bit reckless, like the fun-loving friend who shows up to Thanksgiving looking slightly worse for wear. Sure, it can get chaotic, and you might not know what to expect, but that unpredictability is half the charm.
This season, Dallas boasts one of the most dynamic offenses in the league. They rank high in scoring and passing yards, playing a style akin to a casual beach game instead of a meticulous NFL match-up. While other teams work for lengthy, strategic drives, the Cowboys zoom through their plays at an impressive speed. Each drive averages only about 6.4 plays and lasts just under three minutes. It’s like they can’t wait to get to the end zone!
Of course, the Cowboys’ 6-6-1 record tells another story. Their defense? Well, it’s not exactly stellar. They rank near the bottom in points allowed, treating key stops like appetizers rather than the main course. Expecting them to hold off the opposition is a gamble, and defensively, they’ve struggled throughout the season.
In a league that’s becoming increasingly precise, the Cowboys are more akin to a reckless adventurer—you might cringe at times, but you can’t look away. It’s a wild ride, and I admit, it’s thrilling to witness.
We need more of that energy in football—those big, flashy plays that seem improbable yet full of potential. It would be a breath of fresh air compared to, let’s say, the Eagles’ cautious play. Yes, the Eagles got through last season largely thanks to some unconventional strategies, which is a bit of a drag to watch over time.
The idea of a “Tush Push” or whatever is just—well, it feels bland. I think even Eagles fans realize it’s not exactly thrilling. Who wants to enjoy that kind of play? It’s not even exciting when it shows up in other sports.
What I’m saying is we want those daring throws that might defy logic, yet the Cowboys are unafraid to take risks. Their shaky defense compels them to go for it; they might as well shoot their shot!
This season, despite the Rams being a strong contender, they’re almost too polished. Sometimes, you don’t want to watch an intentionally crafted thriller—sometimes you want a fun, outrageous ride. The Cowboys embody something like a goofy B-movie in the NFL.
If there’s any fairness in this world, somehow we ought to see the Cowboys in the playoffs. It doesn’t have to be about winning it all; just a few entertaining games would do to liven things up and shake off the overbearingly efficient teams.
I think, on some level, you might even want to see the Cowboys in the postseason too, and that’s perfectly okay. Embrace it—it can be your guilty pleasure this season!
