In a development that may come as a shock or excitement to fans of “The Office,” a spinoff series of the popular show has been greenlit.
The Peacock series will be a fresh mockumentary with an all-new cast set in the same world as the fan-favorite characters at Dunder Mifflin, except instead of Scranton, Pennsylvania, the show will be set at a struggling paper company in the Midwest.
“Because this new series is technically a spin-off and not a true reboot, it at least avoids the possibility of a black trans Michael Scott or a Mexican non-binary Jim Halpert,” says Lauren Chen, a self-described huge fan of the original series.
But Chen is skeptical.
“NBC has been very blatantly marketing this show as a spinoff of ‘The Office,'” Chen said. “They had the opportunity, the potential, to market this new, as-yet-untitled show as a new sitcom from the creators of ‘The Office.'”
“But the fact that they’re being really clear that this is a spinoff of ‘The Office,’ and that it’s set in the same universe, makes it seem like they’re trying to easily attach ‘The Office’ and all the goodwill and fanbase that that show currently has to this new thing.”
“It feels so cheesy,” she added.
While fans of “The Office” are hoping the old cast will return for the new show, Chen said the leads from the original series have no interest whatsoever.
Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott in the original series, was quick to shoot down the idea during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show.
When Colbert asked if he would be appearing on the show, Scott responded, “No way.”
“He’s not interested, he’s not involved,” Chen said.
“Remember, this is a guy who never even planned on finishing the rest of the original series. He quit peacefully.”
John Krasinski, who played the loveable Jim Halpert in the original series, has also said he will not be appearing in the spin-off series.
“I’m not sure it will work. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong,” Chen said.
