The Pacers’ trade for Pascal Siakam enabled their ideal NBA Playoffs journey.

Pacers and Raptors: A Crossroads of Hope and Struggles

The Indiana Pacers certainly made for an exciting narrative this season, though there was something a bit gimmicky about them. They burst out of the gate in the 2023-2024 season, playing at a rapid pace, and showcasing young point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who started to shine like a star. By January 2024, they had achieved the highest offensive efficiency ratings in NBA history. Yet, despite this impressive feat, they found themselves muddled in the lower rungs of the Eastern Conference playoff standings, largely due to one of the league’s weakest defenses.

On the flip side, the Toronto Raptors were navigating a different struggle. After winning the NBA Championship in 2019, their competitiveness dwindled following Kawhi Leonard’s departure to the Los Angeles Clippers. While they still boasted some solid players, after losing Fred VanVleet, they really struggled to shoot effectively, creating a team that almost seemed to be intentionally losing games.

Shortly after ringing in the new year, the Pacers and Raptors struck a deal that seemed mutually beneficial. Pascal Siakam was sent to Indiana along with two first-round picks for the 2024 NBA Draft and another first-round pick for 2026. Bruce Brown, the top asset going to Toronto, became part of the transaction. At the time, both organizations were praised for the move. However, fast forward 16 months and only one team emerged as the clear victor.

The Pacers now find themselves on the brink of the 2025 NBA Finals after taking a commanding 2-0 lead over the New York Knicks, both victories secured at Madison Square Garden during the Eastern Conference Finals. Game 1’s historic comeback remains unforgettable, but the win in Game 2 further highlighted how far the Pacers have come since adding Siakam.

In Game 2, Siakam dazzled with an outstanding performance, racking up 39 points on 23 shots, plus five rebounds and three assists. His scoring came in a variety of ways—something the Knicks seemed completely unprepared for. It was a showcase of how Siakam resolved some of Indiana’s structural challenges, contributing to the team’s potential run at the NBA Finals.

When the Pacers secured Siakam, they filled a glaring need. Standing 6’8″ and weighing 245 pounds, his long wingspan complemented Miles Turner in the front court. Siakam brought not only size but also a second offensive creator, a strategic change alongside Haliburton’s fast-paced style. While Indiana thrived on fast breaks, Siakam also had the ability to control the game and score efficiently in half-court situations.

Post-trade, the Pacers’ offense dipped slightly, but their defense showed improvement. They caught some breaks in the 2024 playoffs, benefiting from injuries to key players on rival teams. The Pacers pushed through to the conference finals, offering the toughest challenge to the Celtics on their path to the title.

While last season’s conference finals may have felt like a surprising feat, it laid the groundwork for the team’s genuine ability to compete. This year, with Siakam’s contribution, the Pacers became more balanced, ranking 9th in offensive metrics and 14th in defense.

In another stroke of fortune, the Pacers found favorable conditions in the playoffs. Injuries plagued opponents, notably the Bucks and Cavaliers, who fell short against Indiana’s revamped squad. In the end, the Pacers surpassed expectations, showcasing their potential as a top contender in the East.

Siakam’s contribution has been invaluable throughout the season, averaging an efficient 20 points while maintaining excellent ball control and creating opportunities for other shooters. He earned a third All-Star nod while consistently demonstrating a positive impact on team dynamics. The numbers he posted were quite compelling.

With Siakam’s blockbuster trade, the Pacers converted risk into reward—swapping three first-round picks and adding a significant financial commitment. It might have seemed bold at the time, but it has thankfully paid off for Indiana. On the other hand, the Raptors seem to be struggling to find their footing following this trade.

  • Brandon Ingram (acquired from a 2026 first-round pick)
  • Ochai Agbaji (gained through a pick involving the Siakam trade)
  • Ja’kobe Walter (selected using the Pacers’ original 2024 pick)
  • Jamal Shead (drafted in the second round as part of the Siakam trade)

The Raptors appeared set for a rebuild, having parted ways with key players like Siakam, OG Anunoby, and VanVleet. Yet, while they lost VanVleet with minimal gains in return, they traded Anunoby for young talent rather than more promising picks. The “three first-round picks” might have looked appealing on paper, but those assets have not translated into premium players.

All in all, the Siakam trade has bolstered the Pacers, making them a more formidable team with diverse strategies. Now, Indiana’s grand vision unfolds on basketball’s biggest stage, as they aim to capitalize on the momentum generated by the initial leap of faith that brought Siakam to town.
