The Carolina Panthers’ Confusing Season

The Carolina Panthers are proving to be one of the most perplexing teams in the 2025 NFL season. Take Sunday, for instance: they were underdogs on their home turf yet managed to pull off a significant win against the Cowboys, finishing 30-27.

This season has been marked by self-inflicted errors and missed chances for the Panthers. Frequently, turnovers and missed drives masked the team’s potential. Often, they found themselves playing catch-up, and Carolina struggled particularly because Teitairoa McMillan was their only reliable receiving threat.

Then came Rico Doodle, who really turned things around for the Panthers. Doodle provided an energy that the team had been lacking, especially compared to Tuba Hubbard. Despite starting only two games, he’s among the top five in rushing yards this season. In fact, he’s set to make history as the first running back since 2020 to achieve over 200 all-purpose yards in consecutive games.

Against Dallas, Doodle was a standout performance with 30 carries and four receptions. His hard-hitting runs forced the Cowboys’ linebackers into gap control mode, which opened more avenues for the passing game. Bryce Young appeared more at ease in the pocket, primarily because he had a running back who could consistently gain ground, alleviating some of the pressure off him.

Even though the statistics might suggest otherwise, Young played solidly, managing to avoid mistakes for the first time this season. His only interception occurred early in the game due to a dropped pass from McMillan, which led to an easy pick. However, Young encouraged McMillan afterward, helping him shake off the moment. The two later connected for two touchdown passes in the second half, ensuring the Panthers’ victory.

Now, while Dallas certainly has issues on defense, Carolina took advantage of this opportunity, which is something they often fail to do. Their earlier performance against Miami had hinted at their potential, and perhaps better days are ahead for the Panthers.

Looking ahead to Week 7, the return of wide receiver Jalen Coker could provide a significant boost. Coker, sidelined by a quadriceps injury following the Panthers’ trade of Adam Thielen, has left the receiving group looking rather thin, especially with Xavier Leggett struggling this season.

Defensively, though, the Panthers still face challenges. They’ve allowed too many big plays in the passing game yet have become surprisingly adept at stopping the run—a feat made more remarkable considering they allowed over 140 rushing yards to Travis Etienne in their season opener.

So far, the Panthers have achieved a record they can be pleased with in a rather unconventional way. Before the season started, many might have viewed games against the Jaguars, Patriots, and Cardinals as winnable. However, they lost those but managed to triumph over the Falcons, Dolphins, and Cowboys. With a current record of 3-3 and a matchup against the struggling Jets next week, the offense could gain much-needed strength, especially for McMillan.

It seems likely that by this time next week, the Panthers could hold a 4-3 record, marking their first winning record since 2019. While the games haven’t always been thrilling, head coach Dave Canales has guided this team through tough times, which is commendable for such a young squad.

Loser: Dallas Cowboys Defense

It’s apparent when a player isn’t meeting expectations on the field, and this time, the Cowboys fall short on multiple levels.

It’s perplexing how defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has become a liability for the team. His inability to adjust even with talented players can lead to disaster, and that seems to be what’s happening with the Cowboys’ defense.

Throughout the game, Doodle exploited gaps in the Cowboys’ defense with ease. There were no schemed adjustments or efforts to contain him, almost as if the defense resigned itself early on.

Linebacker performance was particularly concerning, especially Kenneth Murray Jr., who failed to cover Doodle during critical plays, including a vital fourth-down reception that set the stage for Carolina’s win.

While the Dallas offense excels, relying solely on that won’t suffice. If a team as flawed as the Panthers can win high-scoring games against them, that spells trouble.

Adding to the chaos is the trading of Micah Parsons, which was intended to bolster their run defense. However, the team still allowed over 200 rushing yards to players who were previously overlooked.

In other news, the Dolphins faced another disappointing loss, though this one showed some promise at least for a while. The post-game discussions were troubling, especially Tua Tagovailoa highlighting teammate attendance issues during a players-only meeting.

Mike McDaniel’s grip on this team appears to be slipping, and it’s increasingly difficult to see a pathway back to accountability. It might be time to consider a change.

Loser: Disappointing Jets

The Jets find themselves in a disappointing position. They’re still winless, and there’s uncertainty about when they might finally tally a victory. Next week against the Panthers could pose more challenges than expected, as New York’s offense has shown little promise.

What’s truly shocking is how far the Jets have fallen. Once seen as a team on the rise, they’re now struggling to compete. Aaron Glenn is facing one of the worst coaching starts in Jets history, and despite having solid players like Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner, the prospect of a historically poor record looms.

It’s alarming to see the Jets falter across all areas of the game, making recovery seem nearly impossible. The road ahead looks long for fans in East Rutherford.

In the spotlight is Rico Doodle, who is definitely making waves this season. Last year, he had a solid performance with 1,000 yards, but so far this season, he has amassed 389 yards in just two starts, placing him among the top five rushers.

A big question for the Panthers as they await Chuba Hubbard’s return is how to balance the backfield. Hubbard had struggled to find his rhythm before getting injured, while Doodle’s current form complicates things for the coaching staff.

This all boils down to the significant ramifications of a one-year, $2.75 million deal. If Doodle’s performance continues, he may soon land one of the richest contracts in the league.

Many were skeptical about the Seahawks’ offseason moves, especially concerning Sam Darnold, but it seems Seattle’s gamble is paying off as he transforms into a reliable quarterback.

Seattle’s 4-2 record, while not overwhelmingly impressive, positions them as serious contenders in the NFC West, especially with injuries affecting the 49ers.

More crucial than wins, Darnold’s developing connection with Jackson Smith-Njigba could be key for the Seahawks moving forward. It’s been a surprising twist this season, as expectations leaned heavily toward the Raiders improving at Seattle’s expense.

While some might minimize the significance of beating the Saints, it’s notable given the Patriots’ ascension as a solid team. Mike Vrabel’s coaching has played a role, and quarterback Drake Maye’s performance in his second season has been commendable.

If Maye keeps up his current trajectory, he could finish the season with impressive stats, which is astonishing considering the lack of an elite receiver.

As much as it may sting, the Patriots found their franchise quarterback sooner than anticipated, reminiscent of the Colts transitioning from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck. Despite the unexpected timeline, the Patriots are making a comeback, and fans everywhere must contend with that reality.

Lastly, kudos to Travis for his recent losses, all while the Chiefs have managed to keep their season afloat despite the current weakness of the AFC West. History has shown that Kansas City always finds a way to secure wins.
