The Party Won't Give In Unless 'Planes Are Falling from the Sky'

Standstill Over Government Shutdown

A senior Democratic aide indicated to CNN that the party is firm on not negotiating for a government shutdown, jokingly suggesting that only “planes would need to fall from the sky” for them to reconsider.

Currently, Democrats show no willingness to reopen operations. House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana has made it clear to the public about the Democratic demands, which include a hefty $1.5 trillion in spending, specifically for taxpayer-funded health care for unauthorized immigrants.

In the midst of this, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York opted to make health care the focal point of discussion. This move, however, comes despite Johnson’s assertion that health care concerns and the shutdown are distinctly separate topics.

Johnson remarked, “They are completely different things.” He continued, stressing that a simple continuing resolution is merely about keeping the government running while lawmakers address health care. “We’ve always had a plan. We have plenty of ideas on how to resolve it, but we haven’t reached an agreement yet because it’s quite complex. There’s still time for that,” he noted.

Throughout this standoff, the Democrats have remained steadfast. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt reacted strongly, referencing the aide’s comments. “That’s astonishing. Democrats are essentially saying they can’t resolve the shutdown unless there’s a crisis with air traffic controllers, which is quite inflammatory,” she said. “It’s one of the most shocking comments I’ve encountered.”

Meanwhile, Republicans argue that Democrats are focusing on distractions to satisfy their more extreme faction. Johnson claimed, “In their desperation, they chose to create a diversion. They insisted the funding issue in September was all about health care, which it wasn’t; that was set for discussion in December.”

He added, “They attempted to spin it as a September issue… In their haste, they proposed an outrageous counteroffer, which is just a list of excessive government expenditures, and we simply can’t agree to that.”

A recent poll from Harvard-Harris University indicated that many believe Democrats should align with previous spending levels to reopen government, and a considerable number think Republicans will emerge victorious in this shutdown battle.

This week, former President Donald Trump criticized Schumer for prioritizing his party over the needs of the country. “Chuck Schumer stated this morning that ‘every day is getting better for them.’ Actually, it’s getting worse for them daily,” Trump remarked. “They’re inciting turmoil within their own party to maintain that.”
