The Play That Has People Wondering About George Pickens' Effort

The Dallas Cowboys and George Pickens: A Disappointing Outcome

The Cowboys traded for George Pickens hoping for a game-changing performance, but he fell short when they needed it most.

On Thursday night, Dallas was in dire need of a win against the Lions—not just to maintain their three-game winning streak, but also to gain a crucial head-to-head victory in a tightly contested NFC Wild Card race.

After star receiver CeeDee Lamb took a hard fall while attempting a catch and was subsequently ejected, it was up to quarterback Dak Prescott to rely on his remaining star receiver. Dallas was facing a Lions offense that appeared unstoppable.

Yet, Pickens couldn’t deliver.

With time running out and the Cowboys trailing 44-30, head coach Brian Schottenheimer called for a high-risk play involving Pickens, hoping it might slice the lead in half if executed correctly.

Was the pass spot-on? Not exactly. But could a top-tier receiver make that catch with a bit of effort? Definitely.

This wasn’t an isolated incident; there were also moments where Pickens’ lack of urgency was glaring, particularly in a sideline play that likely frustrated Prescott.

Post-game analysis from Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football contributor Richard Sherman was quite critical of Pickens’ performance. He noted, “George Pickens just wasn’t interested during the game, particularly towards the end. That shouldn’t happen. If you want to be viewed as a superstar, motivation is key regardless of how a game unfolds.”

Supporting Sherman’s assessment, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his disappointment, albeit tactfully. He commented, “He hasn’t played like he has before, in terms of effort. I’m cautious about putting him out there. He possesses explosive talent—I see that positively—but I can’t clearly explain why his appearances were limited tonight.”

While that’s about as close as an owner might come to publicly scrutinizing a star player, it spoke volumes.

In the end, Pickens recorded a mere five catches for 37 yards—his worst outing since the season opener. He also racked up two major penalties: a face mask and offensive pass interference.

Despite last night’s setback, Pickens has achieved career highs this season with 78 receptions, 114 targets, 1,179 yards, and eight touchdowns. If the Cowboys (6-6-1) are to have playoff aspirations, they will need Pickens back in form before Week 14 arrives.
