The Poor Quality of Super Bowl Halftime Shows Is Due to Jay-Z

Jay-Z’s Influence on Super Bowl Halftime Show

It seems Jay-Z is facing some criticism for the recent Super Bowl halftime shows.

In 2019, his entertainment company, Roc Nation, entered into a partnership with the NFL aimed at revamping the Super Bowl, following the cultural tensions raised by Colin Kaepernick’s protests. This arrangement reportedly placed a significant amount of creative authority regarding talent selection in Jay-Z’s hands.

Instead of a traditional committee to oversee the entertainment choices, Jay-Z has taken on the role of lead advisor and co-producer, which has sparked concerns from various quarters.

Jay-Z appears to have considerable influence over decisions, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell supporting Jay-Z’s selection of Bad Bunny for 2026’s halftime show.

Throughout his tenure in hip-hop and R&B, Jay-Z has brought forth performances from stars like Rihanna, Usher, and Kendrick Lamar. The 2022 show featured a reunion of West Coast rap legends including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige.

This year, fans had to experience Bad Bunny’s inaugural solo performance in Spain, which included surprise appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.

Interestingly, just a week prior to his Super Bowl appearance, Bad Bunny used the Grammys stage to express his strong anti-immigrant and anti-ICE sentiments. It’s a bit ironic, I suppose, given the nature of the audience at the Super Bowl.

Even if Jay-Z’s choices don’t resonate with everyone, there’s still some hope for those seeking variety. The “All-American Halftime Show,” produced by Turning Point USA, gained notable popularity, having been streamed over 25 million times, which could pave the way for its return next Super Bowl season.
