Celtics Eye Giannis Antetokounmpo, but Challenges Loom

The Boston Celtics are keen on acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, yet it seems the process won’t be straightforward.

Recently, Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam mentioned that the franchise wishes to clarify the superstar’s future before the upcoming NBA Draft, which is just days away.

Though Boston is interested in the two-time MVP, sources indicate there are some discrepancies between the Celtics and the Bucks regarding the potential deal.

According to a report, if Boston had its preference, they’d ideally trade Jaylen Brown straight up for the 31-year-old Antetokounmpo.

However, it’s “unclear” if the Bucks view Brown as a foundational piece, and it’s suggested that bringing in Antetokounmpo would require more than just a one-for-one swap, involving additional players and draft picks.

Interestingly, it seems that the 2021 Finals MVP would be open to signing an extension with the Celtics if a deal is reached.

That said, the Bucks are likely eager to settle Antetokounmpo’s situation quickly, given the ongoing rumors and discussions surrounding him.

While he hasn’t officially requested a trade, there are indications he expressed interest in a move last season.

Additionally, last summer, the Bucks reportedly had brief talks with the Knicks regarding a potential trade for him. Milwaukee chose to keep the future Hall of Famer beyond the trade deadline, even as they faced a tough season. Now, according to unnamed executives, they find themselves “overwhelmed” with trade offers.

The Miami Heat are also rumored to be interested in acquiring Antetokounmpo.

This past season, he had an impressive statistical performance, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists over just 36 games. Unfortunately, the supporting cast was lacking, leading to a disappointing 32-50 record.

On the other hand, Brown had an outstanding season and finished sixth in MVP voting, helping the Celtics thrive even while Jayson Tatum was sidelined with injuries.

There are whispers that Brown, at 29, might eventually desire a team of his own, which adds another layer to the ongoing discussions.
