ESPN’s Burke Magnus Discusses Analyst Changes

It seems the conversation around ESPN’s changes isn’t just about Doris Burke.

Burke Magnus, the content president at ESPN, recently shared insights on a podcast about the recent shift that saw Burke demoted from the top NBA commentary team. He reflected on the reasoning behind this decision. “We were still searching for that ideal mix, so I think it was a justified choice,” Magnus explained.

He emphasized Burke’s exceptional talent: “We’re talking about an A-Plus Plus person here in Doris Burke… It’s no coincidence we partnered her with someone new while also expanding her role.”

Burke has previously worked alongside Mike Breen and analysts like Richard Jefferson, but now she’s set to team up with Dave Pash for the upcoming season.

Magnus added, “With her experience in the previous three-person setup, we genuinely believe that the best showcase of Doris’s skills is in collaboration with the play-by-play announcer. We’re aiming for a fresh arrangement.”

He reassured listeners that Burke will still call significant games in her new position, tapping into the expertise of ESPN’s NBA production team—beyond just the finals, she’ll be involved in key regular season matchups.

At 60 years old, Burke comes from a strong basketball background and has received mixed feedback on her role as a leading voice in the sport.

After the layoffs of Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy in 2023, Burke stepped in. JJ Reddick filled in for Rivers before transitioning to head coach of the Lakers, with Jefferson taking Reddick’s place.

As for Tim Legler, he emerged as a respected figure at ESPN after a career as a three-point specialist with seven NBA teams. Magnus praised him, noting, “Tim has a fantastic story. He’s been in the ESPN fold for over 25 years, working both on broadcasts and in the studio. He’s a great communicator and a well-respected basketball expert.”

Magnus believes Legler hasn’t received the recognition he deserves over the years. “He has a solid following amongst fans and experts alike, so it’s exciting to see him step into this role on the top team,” he remarked.
