WNBA Trade Deadline Approaches with Key Deal
The WNBA trading deadline is coming up, and two teams in the midst of rebuilding are making moves that could pay off in the future. The Connecticut Sun revealed on Thursday that they have traded guard Jacee Sheldon to the Washington Mystics in exchange for forward Aaliyah Edwards. Both players are in their second year and, while still developing, have shown glimpses of potential in the league.
Additionally, the Mystics will receive the opportunity to exchange their 2026 First Round Pick, which they acquired from Minnesota, for Connecticut’s First Round Pick from New York. This trade seems beneficial for the Sun as it adds another promising player to join Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Anesa Moreau, potentially seting them up for long-term success.
It’s also worth noting that Edwards, a fan favorite from the University of Connecticut, is returning to her home state, likely attracting a decent crowd to Mohegan Sun Arena. The Mystics have faced some challenges recently, having traded Brittney Sykes and still missing Georgia Amoore for the rest of the season. Jacee Sheldon is known for her ability to shoot and handle the ball, making her a valuable addition to their younger roster.
What Washington Mystics Gain with Jacee Sheldon
Jacee Sheldon, who was traded from the Dallas Wings during the offseason, has averaged 7.5 points and 2 assists this season, shooting 47% from the field. Despite still being in the early stages of her career, she’s already shown promise in starting 17 out of 24 games this season.
She’ll be joining a backcourt that recently lost All-Star Britney Sykes and includes rookie guard Sonia Citron. Washington will also welcome back Georgia Amoore, who is recovering after tearing her ACL shortly after being drafted.
What Connecticut Sun Gains with Aaliyah Edwards
Aaliyah Edwards had a solid rookie season with the Mystics, although she found herself largely sitting on the bench this season, playing behind rookie forwards Kiki Iliana and center Shakira Austin. She averaged six points and 3.3 rebounds in just over 13 minutes per game, a drop from 21.8 minutes last year.
In Connecticut, Edwards will team up with rookie Anesa Moreau and veteran center Tina Charles, potentially strengthening the team’s frontcourt for years ahead.
This trade marks a swap between two top picks from the 2024 WNBA draft: Sheldon was the fifth pick overall, while Edwards was taken sixth.
