Texas Conservatives Question GOP Leadership

Texas conservatives have always relied on Republicans to adhere to foundational principles like secure borders, family values, the Second Amendment, and smaller government. We brought power to Austin, but many GOP lawmakers seem more focused on catering to corporate donors and elite media instead of grassroots supporters.

Although Texas is a predominantly red state, recent legislative sessions told a different story. Thirty-six Republican state representatives sided with Democrats to vote against conservative priorities. They campaign as tough fighters but fold under the slightest pressure from media or lobbyists. This isn’t leadership; it feels like betrayal.

When Texas Republicans stray from their values, it’s not just a loss; it impacts the nation as a whole.

Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star aims to address border issues, but the reality is that the borders remain open. Despite the previous administration’s efforts, drug cartels continue to transport drugs and people across Texas. Many ranchers live in constant fear, while families grieve the loss of loved ones to fentanyl. Texans are asking for action, but all Austin seems to offer is a press release.

Regardless of federal efforts, Texas has the constitutional authority to take action on its own. So where is the declaration of invasion? Where’s the comprehensive mobilization? Leadership involves more than just photo-ops; it’s about effective law enforcement.

Parents Seek Transparency

Texas parents crave transparency about their children’s education—specifically regarding gender and related issues. While some lawmakers are stepping up, many still align with school boards and bureaucrats who dismiss these concerns as “cultural war nonsense” and view parents as adversaries.

Legislators who allow minors to undergo irreversible medical procedures without parental consent shouldn’t hold conservative positions. That’s not a compromise; it’s outright surrender.

Defending the Second Amendment

After every shooting, moderate Republicans suggest “reasonable limits” on gun rights. But the Constitution is clear: it’s not to be compromised.

Texans don’t want a red flag law; they want their rights respected. When politicians like Congressman Dan Crenshaw indulge in discussions about limiting gun rights, it doesn’t come off as sensible; it feels weak. If you aren’t going to unapologetically defend your rights, maybe you shouldn’t wield them at all.

Meme Bill Raises Concerns

The Texas GOP is currently entertaining restrictive voice regulations, including a bill that would have required the registration of anonymous political memes. This isn’t governance; it’s about control.

Conservatives should stand firm on protecting anonymous speech, remembering its importance for criticism and satire. If Austin starts acting like Washington, voters might start treating it that way.

Disconnection from the Base

The issues at hand extend beyond policy; they touch on culture. The GOP establishment in Austin often seems more aligned with lobbyists than with the voters who support them. Main challengers to this status quo are dismissed as “fringe,” despite a growing and energized grassroots base.

There’s an increasing desire for bold reform. If Governor Ron DeSantis can achieve conservative victories in Florida, why can’t Texas do the same? Why are we still making excuses?

A National Perspective

Texas is playing a crucial role in shaping the national Republican landscape. When Texas Republicans falter, it doesn’t just affect their state; it affects the entire nation.

As shown by state legislator Brian Harrison, the last legislative session revealed significant fractures within the GOP foundation. It’s critical for conservatives to respond effectively, organizing locally and making their presence felt in Austin. Just because there’s an “R” next to your name doesn’t mean you’re above scrutiny. If you govern like a Democrat, expect to be treated as such.

We need to secure borders, empower parents, uphold the Second Amendment, and protect free speech. Or, honestly, just get out of the way.

Texas doesn’t need more Republicans; it needs better ones.
