Bill Barr Defends Performance at Riyadh Comedy Festival
Comedian Bill Barr has responded to criticism regarding his participation in the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate that some comedians faced backlash for seeming to profit from a regime deemed totalitarian.
“I made a principled decision,” remarked comedian Shane Gillis, referencing his choice to decline Saudi Arabia’s invitation. He emphasized views about how the country shouldn’t be seen merely through the lens of its government.
In discussing his experience, Barr mentioned, “It was wonderful to be part of the first comedy festival in Saudi Arabia.” He shared that the audience, including local royals, enjoyed the show and that the organizers were enthusiastic about the event.
He even joked about initial concerns he had: “I thought I’d get a hostile reaction—maybe even my head on a chopping block,” reflecting on the general perceptions surrounding the region.
Barr also expressed surprise at the youthfulness of the audience and the diversity of American food options available. He commented humorously, “Is that Starbucks next to Pizza Hut next to Burger King? They even have chili peppers here!” He added that during the performance, he was astonished that the audience showed no signs of being familiar with his reputation.
In conclusion, he noted that the people in Saudi Arabia simply wanted to enjoy themselves. “People are great. It’s the government that’s problematic,” he pointed out. “I continue to learn this with every trip—those I met there just wanted to laugh and have a good time.”
