Recently, President Donald Trump stirred up some discussions in the NFL realm by suggesting that there would be consequences if the Washington Commanders didn’t revert to the Redskins name at the RFK Stadium site.
During a segment on the “Grant & Danny” show on 106.7 Fan in DC, Chairman of the DC Council, Phil Mendelsson, indicated that he was open to a name change, noting that previous opposition to “Redskins” was more linked to former owner Dan Snyder than the name itself.
Trump, over the weekend, made several posts on social media advocating for the name change, claiming a connection to the Redskins’ legacy and expressing concern over how heritage has been overlooked.
Scott Turner, the director of Housing and Urban Development and a former Redskins player, voiced support for the push to rename the team. He argued that the team’s historical significance demands recognition.
In one of his posts, Trump mentioned that if the franchise transitioned back to the “Redskins” name, it would foster a deal to build a new stadium in Washington. He also highlighted the potential benefits to the local area.
However, the current general manager of the Commanders, as well as the DC mayor, did not resonate with Trump’s perspective. In subsequent comments, Trump acknowledged that his remarks about the Redskins had been interpreted positively but emphasized that if the name “Commanders” was retained without a return to “Redskins,” the stadium project would not occur.
Daniel Snyder, the former owner, had changed the name from Redskins to Washington Football Team amid rising cultural tensions, and the team has since been rebranded as the Commanders following Snyder’s sale of the franchise to Josh Harris. Harris had previously stated that the team would not be reclaiming the Redskins name, indicating a strong attachment to the current branding due to its connection to the community.
In light of recent discussions, Harris explained that the Commanders name possesses a certain significance, particularly given the military ties in the area. He indicated that the focus would remain on moving forward rather than reverting back to older names.
