Recently released documents and shocking text messages have surfaced in the Kawhi Leonard salary cap violation case, involving Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.
As a result of the findings, the Clippers faced a hefty $30 million fine, while Ballmer received a one-year suspension and the team lost five first-round draft picks. This strict penalty underscores the league’s belief in the team’s wrongdoing.
Documents from the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz reveal that in April 2020, Clippers president Lawrence Frank recorded notes indicating that Leonard’s former manager, known as “Uncle Dennis” Robertson, was dissatisfied with the Clippers’ apparent lack of commitment to fulfill promised off-court business opportunities.
According to Robertson, he voiced concerns to Ballmer about Gillian Zucker, the president of business operations, making what he described as “bulls-t deals” through introductions. He remarked, “I can’t wait on [Ms. Zucker]; I have to get paid.”
In response, Ballmer allegedly reassured Robertson that the Clippers’ staff were all working together to help Leonard achieve his financial aspirations.
Robertson’s frustration possibly stemmed from Leonard’s free agency, which occurred nine months before these discussions, leading to impatience over promised opportunities that hadn’t materialized post-signing.
In 2021, Leonard secured a three-year contract with a player option in the final year.
Moreover, the documents indicate that Aspiration, a sustainability-focused tree-planting company that was indicted for wire fraud and conspiracy in October 2025, committed to paying Leonard $48 million in cash and stock, or $12 million annually over four years, as part of his Clippers contract.
In exchange, Aspiration reportedly offered business contract opportunities linked to the Clippers’ arena, The Forum, which Ballmer had acquired in 2020, with anticipation of a deal involving the arena.
Joe Sanberg, Aspiration’s founder, sent a stern message to a business agent associated with the Clippers, who seems to have acted as a whistleblower. He stated, “Kawhi deal is not happening without this Forum deal… ZERO CHANCE there is a Kawhi deal if this isn’t fixed.” He indicated that he’d have to break the deal with Kawhi and explain its failure was due to the Clippers’ management.
The documents hint at Balmer’s potential awareness of these dynamics via an email from former CFO Eric Chan on March 31, 2022. Chan noted that if the deal unraveled, it would be communicated to Leonard that his $12 million arrangement would vanish because of the Clippers’ management, suggesting a lack of oversight on Balmer’s part.
Ballmer acknowledged in interviews that he knew of Sanberg’s ongoing warnings about the repercussions of not finalizing the Forum Agreement promptly.
Ultimately, the Clippers approved the Forum Agreement in April 2022, an action deemed by investigators as facilitating a breach of NBA rules.
Valued at a minimum of $28 million, the Forum Agreement purportedly aimed to help offset the team’s carbon emissions, though the real worth of this contract remains ambiguous within the documents.
Previously, Ballmer disputed wrongdoing, claiming that initial allegations were “provably false,” as stated during an interview.
Despite the evidence suggesting otherwise, the former Microsoft CEO maintains that he and the Clippers are innocent.
“We strongly refute the NBA’s conclusions, which arise from a biased investigation that seeks to uphold a predetermined narrative rather than the true facts,” Ballmer asserted.
The penalties for Leonard were relatively mild, resulting in a $700,000 fine without any suspension from the league.

According to the law firm’s documents, “A credible witness with direct knowledge told investigators that the consulting agreement one company signed with the Clippers was in fact a ruse, designed and intended to be a vehicle for the team to provide funds to be paid to Mr. Leonard.”
