Is “The Simpsons” over?
The long-running animated comedy series confused viewers when it aired what it called a “series finale” during its Season 36 premiere on Sunday.
The episode, titled “Bart's Birthday,” began with the animated version of Conan O'Brien, who used to write the show's scripts, hosting a celebration with some of the biggest names in animation.
Director O'Brien told the audience, “It's a great honor to be able to watch the final episode of The Simpsons with you.” “I had hosted the last three episodes of my show and have hosted in the future, so I knew I was the right person for the job.”
“Well, it's true. Fox has decided to end The Simpsons,” O'Brien continued. “It means the world to me to be here because this show was such a special part of my early career. Also. I left a sweater in the writers' room in 1993, and this is what they told me.” It's the only way to give back.”
After claiming that Fox had been “trying to end” the show for years, O'Brien said “classic episodes” such as 1990's “Bart the Daredevil” and 2000's “Little Big Mom” He showed a clip of the unaired final episode of the series.
O'Brien then announced the season 36 premiere and revealed its big twist. This episode was created using AI and includes various dramatic moments that conclude the show.
Mr. Burns' death, Mo's school closure, and Principal Skinner's retirement were among the AI-created scenes that hilariously unfolded during the episode.
There were also animations that recreated the final scenes of popular shows such as “Game of Thrones,” “Succession,” “The Sopranos,” “Breaking Bad” and “Frasier.”
At the end of the episode, Bart breaks out of the AI illusion and Bart is now 11 years old, despite having been 10 years old since the beginning of the show. The fake “series finale” ends when Bart regains his senses again.
The show's AI storyline left fans perplexed, but they eventually realized that the show wasn't actually over.
“Obviously I thought this was the series finale until I realized it was all a joke XD But still this was a great and funny season 36 premiere! Loved all the references!” one fan I wrote to X (Formerly Twitter).
“I was definitely captivated by the on-screen graphics of that “series finale”! ” another person tweeted.
“Tonight's premiere of @TheSimpsons wasn't the series finale, but it was fucking amazing!!! Great job, writer Jessica Conrad!” one wrote. different tweet read.
“The Simpsons” aired its first episode on December 17, 1989.
The series is created by Matt Groening and the current voice cast includes Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson), Julie Kavner (Marge Simpson), Nancy Cartwright (Bart and Maggie Simpson), Includes Dolly Smith (Lisa Simpson), Hank Azaria (various characters).
Groening, 70, spoke about the possibility of ending the series in a 2021 interview. USA Today.
“My standard answer is there's no end in sight, because every time I speculate about the show ending, people involved in its production and die-hard fans get very upset.” he said. “That's why I always say there's no end in sight.”
Season 37 of “The Simpsons” has not yet been announced.
