The ‘soft’ reason why Cowboys legend Michael Irvin doesn’t want Mike McCarthy back

Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin has no interest in bringing coach Mike McCarthy back to Big D.

“I still look at my 7-9 record and my 'pretty good December,' and I still say it was too little, too late,” Irvin said on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd. He talked about his former team.

“I think it's time to move in a different direction. And I've heard more recently that people want to stay with Mike McCarthy. I'm not on board with that trend. What I'm saying is that this team needs more discipline. I'm not saying Mike McCarthy isn't a good coach, an Xs and Os coach, but the team needs more discipline. I think we need that,” Irvin said.

Irvin, a close friend of owner Jerry Jones, added that the team is too soft to return to its current structure and the proof is in last week's 41-7 loss by the Eagles.

“These types of games erase December,” Irvin said. “Their backup plays your backup, they put you on 40 burgers, and you look like you look…Yeah, I do [replace McCarthy]”

Irvin said McCarthy is a good coach, but there's another reason why he left him out of the post.

“And it's hard to bring that in when you say, 'Okay, this guy who hasn't been that solid with discipline, now we're going to bring in other people to help with discipline.' 'And it doesn't work.

“You can't come in soft and then try to be tough,” Irvin said.

Irvin added that the Cowboys needed to move forward because they were the fourth-most penalized team in the league and there was no discipline on the team.

Dallas lost key starters for extended periods this season, including starting quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons.

Jones will ultimately make decisions about the coaching staff, but he previously said after the Week 16 win over the Buccaneers that he was proud of the way his team played through the season.

But that may be a bit old news. That's because the Cowboys were paced by Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett and third-stringer Tanner McKee.

Jones was harassed by Eagles fans Sunday as his team was dominated from start to finish while watching from a luxury box.

McCarthy's final game as Cowboys coach will be this Sunday at home against the Commanders.

McCarthy's contract expires after this season, so the Cowboys don't have to waive him.
