Shocking 2025 NBA Draft Lottery Results

The recent 2025 NBA Draft lottery results were quite astonishing, leaving many to ponder their potential impact on the league’s future. It was almost unbelievable that the Dallas Mavericks, holding only a 1.8 percent chance, could move from the 11th pick to snag the top overall pick. Just months ago, they made headlines by trading Luka Doncic, but now they’ve secured a promising asset in Cooper Flagg, which many are saying could be a significant long-term win for the team.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs, who entered the lottery with the eighth-best odds, surprisingly advanced to the second pick overall. This marks the third consecutive year the Spurs have climbed the draft order, granting them another chance to pair an ideal long-term partner with Victor Wembanyama.

Dylan Harper, a guard from Rutgers, has somewhat flown under the radar amid the excitement surrounding the recent draft. Still, NBA scouts recognized his talent early on. Standing at 6’4 ½ inches and weighing 213.2 pounds, with a notable 6’10 ½ wingspan, Harper possesses a remarkable ability to drive toward the basket. When paired with his playmaking skills, shooting from distance, and defensive versatility, he emerges as a key prospect for a team that previously landed one of the game’s best talents.

However, Harper’s role with the Spurs appears a bit uncertain, especially following De’Aaron Fox’s max contract extension. Fox and Wembanyama played only a handful of games together prior to Fox’s season-ending shoulder issue, so the Spurs are all in on Fox at significant cost. Despite this, some might argue that Harper could still complement Wembanyama well, even if they align age-wise. As Fox deals with a hamstring injury at the start of the season, Harper has a chance to shine, and he’s already shown glimpses of his potential.

In just his third NBA game, Harper delivered a standout performance, recording 20 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting, along with eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals, contributing to a win against the Brooklyn Nets. It was quite the display of talent.

During his time at Rutgers, Harper was adept at navigating ball screens and finishing plays at the rim. He shot an impressive 70 percent on close attempts, though just a small fraction came from assists, indicating a strong ability to generate his own shots. There were questions about how he’d fare against NBA-level rim protectors, particularly given that he’s not known for explosive athleticism. However, his performance against the Nets seemed to alleviate those concerns. While he still needs to establish his shooting consistency—he didn’t attempt a three-pointer in that game—he possesses many characteristics of a star guard. Having a player of his caliber beside Wembanyama could spell trouble for other teams in the league.

In San Antonio, Harper is positioned as a supporting player to Wembanyama, but he’s considered one of the most promising young talents across the NBA. The 7’5” Wembanyama brings a unique blend of size and skill, drawing significant attention as the 2025-26 season approaches. As he displays more strength in the paint and gains confidence in various aspects of his game, his early performances hint at a strong MVP potential. It’s remarkable to think he’s just 21, and it’s almost surreal that San Antonio struck lottery luck to also pick up such an elite prospect like Harper.

In 2023, the Spurs jumped from the third lottery position to first, securing Wembanyama. The following year, they showcased their strategic prowess by rising from the fifth spot to fourth, ultimately selecting current Rookie of the Year, Stephon Castle. Clearly, Harper’s situation in the lottery remains crucial for the Spurs, keeping them well-positioned for the future.

Interestingly, the Spurs might not have landed Harper had Wembanyama not faced a season-ending injury last season, which could, in hindsight, have been a blessing for their championship aspirations.

The unpredictable nature of the NBA draft lottery can truly reshape history, and what looked unfortunate for others ended up benefiting the Spurs. As the new season unfolds, it appears San Antonio is making significant strides with the unstoppable Wembanyama, and the addition of Harper poses a significant concern for teams aiming for championship titles in the coming decade.
