The story behind the Red Sox trading Rafael Devers in a surprising deal

Red Sox Trade Raphael Devers to Giants Sparks Controversy

The repercussions of the Red Sox’s unexpected choice to trade Raphael Devers to the Giants are still unfolding.

After Boston sent the $313 million star to San Francisco on Sunday, acquiring Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, and two prospects in return, Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reported a deteriorating relationship between the team and Devers. The report suggests the Red Sox felt their demands were unmet.

According to a source close to the Red Sox, the team believed that with such a hefty contract, Devers had certain obligations that he didn’t fulfill. This frustration led to his trade.

It appears the organization had reached their limit and opted to exchange him.

This transaction followed months of tension between Devers and the Red Sox. After signing a three-year, $120 million deal in February, Devers transitioned from playing first base to a designated hitter role.

The unfolding drama carried through spring training and into the regular season. Devers, at 28 years old, faced scrutiny after stepping in for Triston Casas, who suffered a season-ending injury.

Despite previously struggling defensively, Devers had impressive offensive numbers, boasting a 1.004 OPS early in May. Yet, concerns grew when he seemed to lack effort during a ground ball situation against the Yankees.

Red Sox Manager Alex Cora commented that it was “not a lack of hustle” from Devers.

Now, the trade leaves Devers with a new opportunity with the Giants, who will cover the remainder of his contract. In return, the Red Sox gained prospects James Tibbs and Jose Bello.

San Francisco currently sits second in the NL West with a 41-31 record.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox improved to 37-36 on Sunday after sweeping the Yankees but remain 6.5 games behind the AL East leaders.

The fallout from Devers’ trade continues to stir debate among fans in New England, with some even linking it to unforeseen conspiracy theories involving Premier League football clubs.
