The Struggle for Truth at the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution has faced backlash over its exhibitions related to slavery and a recent statement claiming that humans are 1.2% genetically distinct from chimpanzees. On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump took aim at the Smithsonian, arguing that it focuses too much on negative aspects of American history and neglects more positive narratives.

Trump expressed his views, saying, “The Smithsonians are out of control… all they discuss is how horrifying our country is and how bad slavery was, with no mention of success or brightness for the future.” He further noted that the country seems unaware of its potential, referring to it as “the hottest” nation and encouraging conversations about museums.

In a social media post, he criticized the museums for perpetuating a negative narrative about American history. He also called for his administration to ensure that exhibits reflect “tone, historical framing, and alignment with American ideals” within a 120-day timeframe.

On another front, geologist Casey Ruskin, who advocates for intelligent design, has challenged the Smithsonian’s claim regarding the genetic similarity between humans and chimpanzees. He contests that the actual genetic difference is greater than the 1-2% stated by the museum. Citing studies published in academic journals, Ruskin argues there may be a 15% genetic difference. He characterized the current understanding of human evolution as flawed, emphasizing the need for a broader perspective on genetic similarities.

Ruskin has also critiqued the museum’s assertion that the ancient species Sahelanthropus tchadensis represents an early human, arguing instead that it closely resembles apes. He highlighted that such inaccuracies reflect a larger issue, suggesting that educational institutions, including prominent science museums, may obscure scientific truths. He fears that taxpayer-funded exhibits mislead the public regarding significant scientific and philosophical questions.
