Innovative Sunscreen Approach Sparks Debate

The founder of Primally Pure, Bethany McDaniel, set out to develop skincare products that are not just effective but also free from the chemical toxins prevalent in many commercial options. Her goal is to challenge the existing norms of the skincare market.

Primally Pure’s sunscreens claim to provide ample sun protection without toxic ingredients. Unlike typical sunscreens that often promote fear of sun exposure, McDaniel aims to convey a different message.

“The sun isn’t the enemy; it’s the sunscreen that can be,” she asserts. However, this statement has stirred confusion and ignited debate.

“My intent was to provoke thought and draw attention,” McDaniel mentioned during a discussion with BlazeTV host Ally Beth Stuckey. “For years, we’ve been told to apply sunscreen daily to avoid skin cancer, and now there’s a pushback to that narrative.”

When she launched her ad campaign, McDaniel wanted to highlight the complexity surrounding the conversation about sun exposure and sunscreen, but the reception was not as she anticipated. Many saw her messaging as alarming, despite it being rooted in concerns over skin cancer.

“The campaign has sparked a lot of misconceptions and some intense reactions, just like any bold claim on social media can,” she remarked. “Why is it controversial to question the narrative? We’ve long been taught to fear the sun.”

While the risks of sun exposure are frequently highlighted, few recognize the significant benefits it can offer. “The sun provides us with vitamin D, boosts our mood, and helps regulate our circadian rhythm,” McDaniel elaborated. “There’s more to our relationship with the sun than we’re often led to believe, although uncontrolled exposure does pose a risk.”

That’s precisely why she formulated her own sunscreen, which contains 25% zinc oxide alongside non-toxic, natural ingredients. “Personally, I view zinc oxide as the safest sunscreen ingredient. While there are many chemical filters available, the FDA doesn’t endorse any as absolutely safe. Research shows that only a quarter of sunscreen products on the market are both safe and effective,” she explained.

“Many chemical filters are worrisome. They can accumulate in the bloodstream beyond safe levels and have been linked to hormonal disruptions and cancer,” she added. “It’s alarming to share this information, but I feel it’s necessary.”
