Islanders Face Challenges After West Coast Trip
Returning home after a long West Coast trip is always a challenge. For the Islanders, this is especially true as they gear up for back-to-back games against the Blues on Saturday and the Kraken on Sunday. They’ve already been back in the Eastern time zone for a few days, but still, it feels a bit disorienting.
The journey extended all the way to Las Vegas, with breaks in various time zones before heading back to New York, where they secured a 5-0 win against the Red Wings on Thursday. So, in some ways, they might have a bit of an advantage—avoiding that usual jet lag that comes with such long travels. But still, legs tend to feel heavy, particularly as the weekend draws near at UBS Arena.
Looking ahead, after the game against the Kraken, they face a grueling stretch of seven games in 11 days. That’s a tall order, even for seasoned players. And while the Blues might seem ripe for a win—having lost four straight and facing some goalkeeping struggles—the Kraken won’t be pushovers either. They’ll also be playing back-to-back games, much like the Islanders.
Interestingly, the Islanders have had some success against St. Louis in their recent home matchups, winning seven of the last nine. The last encounter was a victory of 3-1 last March.
This momentum could translate into even more wins, especially since the Islanders have been finding their footing lately, winning six of seven on the current road trip. But, as we know, things in sports rarely align with expectations. It’s often a mixed bag.
Coach Patrick Roy remarked on the quick turnaround, noting, “We won’t have a lot of time to think about it. Tomorrow is an optional event, and I plan to play at 3:30 the next day. There’s not much time to ponder our next steps.”
Despite the quick pace, there’s a hope that this road trip invigorates not only the team but also excites the fans back home. It’s vital to have that energy, especially as attendance at games can wane without it.
According to team statistician Eric Hornig, the Islanders’ six wins in a single road trip ties a franchise record, a feat previously accomplished back in 2016. They’re actually four games above NHL-500 on the road for the first time since early 2020, which might suggest that something good is brewing for the team. Time will tell, though.
