The Time of Traditional Parties is ‘Done, Over, Finished’ Following Reform Win

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage issued a warning to UK Council employees involved in “climate change initiatives” and diversity efforts after a significant electoral victory on Thursday.

Farage spoke to supporters and other winners on Friday evening, following the results of over 1,600 elections across England. He confirmed that his reformist party had emerged victorious, stating, “What happened yesterday is genuinely a historical landmark.”

The reforms successfully won local government elections, including two mayoral posts and 677 council seats.

According to The BBC, based on national forecasts, Reform UK is now set to form the next government, suggesting a shift away from a century-long dominance by Labour and the Conservatives.

Farage expressed his commitment to reform, proclaiming it as the end of an era dominated by two parties in British politics. He insisted that this victory signifies a substantial change, emphasizing, “Politics as we’ve known it for over a century is over.”

He referred to the reform movement as “agents of change… agents of optimism” and claimed they’re poised to make history by winning the next general election.

The reform campaign viewed these elections as a stepping stone towards the upcoming general election, expected in 2029, and tackled national issues during their outreach. In his victory remarks, Farage alluded to local issues he planned to focus on.

Taking inspiration from the US “Doge” initiative aimed at improving government efficiency, he mentioned a shift from “zero to ten,” encouraging “alternative careers” targeting “climate change initiatives and diversity equity and inclusion.”

Recurrent themes from candidates included frustrations with the government’s handling of the immigration crisis and the financial burden on taxpayers for accommodating migrants.

Farage stated that the Reform Council aims to counteract the central government’s immigration policies, saying:

“When they’re granted indefinite leave, they jump to the top of the social housing list. It’s unjust and, frankly, wrong… We are addressing the concerns of young men in the regions we now govern.”

Meanwhile, the Labour and Conservative parties appeared less inclined to comment on the election fallout. Labour Prime Minister Kiel suggested that the public craved enhancements in the government’s offerings, emphasizing speed.

The Prime Minister pointedly remarked, “We acknowledge the message… we’re committed to progressing even faster.”

Given the perception of a lackluster performance, it’s likely this feedback resonates well with Farage.

On the left, a response from party member Diane Abbott pushed back against this notion, stating, “Labour leaders seem to think that merely being faster in the same direction is sufficient. That’s not what this moment calls for.”

In her interview, Abbott noted that the Labour leadership needs to pay attention to voter concerns, particularly regarding winter fuel payments, benefits, and living costs.

Insight from Yougov’s Dylan Difford highlighted the election’s unusual nature, showing that more seats changed hands than in any previous regional elections in modern British history. He characterized the Conservatives’ performance as “the worst local election results for any political party in British history.” While in previous years they had fewer seats to lose, he noted their position from 2017 and 2021 made it seem worse than it actually was.
