The timing of Pete Rose’s Hall of Fame eligibility was ‘incorrect,’ says broadcaster.

Marty Brennaman Critiques MLB’s Timing on Hall of Fame Eligibility for Pete Rose

Marty Brennaman, a former announcer for the Cincinnati Reds, shared his concerns about Major League Baseball’s (MLB) timing regarding Hall of Fame eligibility. The 82-year-old, who provided commentary for the Reds from 1974 to 2019, expressed his discontent after the organization rushed to address Pete Rose’s candidacy shortly after his passing.

Brennaman commented that Rose had served a prison sentence and believed the timing of MLB’s decision was questionable. “I thought the timing was wrong—much too quick,” he remarked, reflecting on the way business was handled concerning Rose’s eligibility.

He recalled Rose’s acknowledgment that he wouldn’t make it into the Hall of Fame while he was alive. “He understood that it wouldn’t happen until he passed away. He mentioned often that he wanted to see that acknowledgement while he could still enjoy it, but he also recognized it was more for his family,” Brennaman stated.

After questioning why MLB delayed addressing this until months after Rose’s death, he conveyed a sense of pain that Rose’s legacy had to bear the burden of his past mistakes. Despite Rose’s desire to see a potential recognition, Brennaman believes it’s more meaningful for Rose’s family now.

In Brennaman’s view, the best outcome for Rose would be that this honor serves his family well. Although the circumstances are laden with complexity, there’s a glimmer of comfort in knowing that his legacy can still bring joy to those he left behind.

Pete Rose, MLB’s all-time hit leader with 4,256 hits, was a celebrated player, winning the National League MVP in 1974 and earning accolades such as 17 All-Star selections. However, his hallmark achievements were overshadowed by his gambling scandal, leading to a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989. Recently, he became eligible to be voted on for the Hall of Fame for the first time since his ban.
