The top 2026 Super Bowl matchups, ranked before the AFC and NFC Championships

Exciting Super Bowl Matchup Predictions

As we gear up for the AFC and NFC Championship games, it’s time to consider who might host a thrilling Super Bowl. If you’re not rooting for the teams still in it, that’s about all we can hope for. Honestly, the last couple of Super Bowls haven’t exactly lived up to expectations; the mix of Chiefs and Eagles fatigue has created a rather dull experience.

Right now, it seems certain we’ll see at least one first-time Super Bowl quarterback from the AFC. Matthew Stafford is the only quarterback remaining in the playoffs who has previously won, taking home the trophy with the Rams in 2022. Given the teams still vying for the title, we could have some interesting matchups this year.

4th Place: Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Rams

The Broncos land at the bottom of this list, and while they’re among the fun teams left in the playoffs, many fans might not want to cap off the NFL season by watching Jarrett Stidham’s performance.

A Broncos-Rams Super Bowl could turn out to be the most lopsided game of the four potential matchups. Denver’s defense has some strength, but it probably won’t be enough against the Rams’ offense, facing off against Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams without Bo Nix.

In a different scenario, this might have been a thrilling game, but as it stands, it feels lackluster.

3rd Place: Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks

The same issues apply here, but Broncos versus Seahawks might hold a bit more interest since both have uniquely strategic defenses. Plus, Sam Darnold might struggle under pressure compared to Stafford.

If Darnold falters, it could create an interesting dynamic, but that’s not a huge likelihood.

2nd Place: New England Patriots vs. Los Angeles Rams

This would be a rematch of Super Bowl III in 2019, though the teams are quite different now. Back then, Tom Brady faced off against Jared Goff, and it was the first Super Bowl appearance for coach Sean McVay.

Today, the inexperience in both squads is more noticeable. The Patriots, now led by Mike Vrabel and rising star Drake Maye, bring a fresh look to the game. Watching these two quarterbacks in an intense passing battle could be a highlight. The defensive matchups also seem quite balanced, likely making this one of the closest Super Bowls.

However, it loses some appeal since we’ve seen the Rams win before. I still remember Stafford holding the Lombardi and McVay’s celebration—there’s a sense of familiarity that dims this matchup a bit.

No. 1: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks

Let’s revisit a past Super Bowl from 2015, when Tom Brady overcame Russell Wilson. Both teams have evolved significantly since then, yet there’s still a lot of excitement this matchup could bring.

The quarterback showdown between New England and Seattle is particularly intriguing, featuring two players who weren’t expected to reach this level. Drake Maye, a standout sophomore who clinched this season’s MVP, and Sam Darnold, whose comeback story after a shaky start has been one of the most compelling narratives in the NFL.

Additionally, both teams have solid secondaries capable of countering the other’s offense.

The Broncos’ lack of Bo Nix puts the Patriots in a strong position as leaders in the AFC. This game promises to showcase the best from each division in the Super Bowl and possibly crown new champions in coaching, quarterback roles, and more.

Once the championship weekend concludes, this is definitely the matchup to keep an eye on.
