The Top 4 Fruits for Reducing Blood Pressure, Based on a Cardiologist’s Advice

Alzheimer's Risk Reduced by Almost 40% for Those Who Do This One Activity

Key Points

  • Bananas are rich in potassium, promoting healthy blood pressure.
  • Berries contain anthocyanins, which studies associate with lower blood pressure levels.
  • Kiwis offer vitamin C and potassium, potentially lowering systolic blood pressure.

Fruits are essential for heart health, packed with fiber, potassium, and antioxidants. If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can be beneficial, according to cardiologist David Sabgir, M.D.

Some fruits have unique properties that can help manage or lower blood pressure. We asked a cardiologist for his top four recommendations.

1. Bananas

When it comes to potassium—key for heart health—you might have guessed bananas would make the list—and you’d be right. “Bananas are an excellent source of potassium, which helps manage hypertension by reducing sodium’s effects and relaxing blood vessel walls,” notes Sabgir.

2. Avocados

“Avocados are not just tasty; they offer dietary fiber and unsaturated fats that support heart health. They provide about 250 milligrams of potassium in a single medium avocado, which is significant,” Sabgir explains. “A potassium-rich diet can help neutralize some of sodium’s negative impact on blood pressure.”

3. Berries

Whether you favor raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries, these fruits can aid in lowering blood pressure, according to the doctor. “Berries contain antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which research indicates can lower blood pressure. There’s evidence linking higher anthocyanin intake to reduced heart disease risk,” he adds.

4. Kiwi

This fuzzy fruit makes the cut thanks to its heart-friendly vitamins. “Full of vitamin C, kiwis may help lower blood pressure in those with primary hypertension,” says Sabgir. “Studies show that eating kiwi daily can decrease systolic blood pressure.” Plus, kiwi’s potassium content also plays a role.

Enjoy a kiwi on its own or as part of a meal—or top slices with chocolate and pistachios for a lighter dessert.

Our Expert Take

High blood pressure, often dubbed the silent killer, affects millions of people across various demographics. How we eat and live significantly influences high blood pressure management. Research shows that excessive sodium intake can increase high blood pressure risk. On the flip side, potassium-rich foods might help by aiding in the removal of excess sodium through the kidneys. Incorporating a serving or two of bananas, avocados, berries, and kiwi into your routine may boost your potassium intake.
