Season 3 of *Diplomat* Proves It’s Worth Watching

If Keri Russell and Deborah Kahn decide to produce *Diplomat* every year, I think we should absolutely encourage them. Season 3 is a testament to their talent and creativity.

After a period where political dramas were scarce and rather conventional, it’s quite refreshing to see a show that makes geopolitics feel engaging and realistic. I’m pleased to share that Season 3 of *Diplomat* delivers just that, and more.

It’s challenging to determine if the show is at its peak right now, given how it has consistently offered a witty perspective on the life of Kate Wyler (played by Russell), the U.S. ambassador to the UK. Currently, it emphasizes Kate’s unique ability to juggle personal and professional responsibilities with remarkable grace—a pitfall many political dramas have stumbled into before. But *Diplomat* makes it look effortless.

Following the shocking conclusion of Season 2 with President Rayburn’s unexpected death, Season 3 introduces U.S. Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) stepping up as President. This change unsettles Kate, Hal (Rufus Sewell), and others, especially since it’s revealed that Penn orchestrated the attack on the Courageous while framing the Russians for the tragedy that claimed numerous British sailors.

Without diving into too many spoilers, it’s evident that the show is skillfully subverting audience expectations this season. While *Diplomat* initially suggested a conflict among Hal, Kate, and President Grace Penn, new developments demand a different approach as the need for a new running mate arises.

What stands out about *Diplomat* is that, beyond being perhaps the most thrilling political drama on television, it also critiques our interactions with allies and adversaries, thoughtfully navigating both macro and micro-level politics. This season manages to keep viewers engaged, despite its focus on similar political themes across all episodes. By centering the narrative on the Courageous attack from different angles, it showcases remarkable storytelling that keeps audiences riveted. I find it surprising that this show continues to attract attention while others struggle for viewers.

Then there’s Bradley Whitford’s appearance in Season 3. Initially, I thought his casting might be a gimmick meant to evoke nostalgia for *The West Wing*. I mean, I get it—there’s a yearning for that classic feel-good political vibe. But honestly, I wasn’t entirely convinced when I first heard he would play Todd Penn, the husband of Janney’s character.

To my surprise, I was wrong. Khan’s writing delivers a nuanced portrayal for Whitford that feels fresh and authentic. Even in just a brief scene, it becomes clear why he was chosen; his performance adds a vital dynamic between the characters. They have an undeniable connection that works beautifully.

Whitford’s role illustrates the careful consideration in casting decisions, which reflects the show’s overall dedication to quality. *Diplomat* excels in keeping its central character poised amid chaos. It’s disheartening that more people don’t watch this gem; their loss, really.

Season 3 of *Diplomat* is now streaming on Netflix.
