Coast Guard’s New Jet Purchase Sparks Debate

There’s been quite a lot of discussion in the media and among politicians regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s recent acquisition of new jets for official travel. At first glance, it might seem extravagant. But if we look a bit closer, this purchase is actually fairly routine and tied to safety concerns.

Some liberals, like David Axelrod, have labeled these aircraft as “luxury jets” and expressed discontent over their cost. However, the two Gulfstream jets, which added to the Coast Guard’s inventory, came with a price tag of $172 million. It’s worth noting that the Coast Guard has been using similar aircraft for leadership transportation since the early 2000s.

The previous long-range jet, the Gulfstream V, was already 20 years old. According to a report from the New York Times, the acting Coast Guard commander testified before Congress highlighting that “avionics equipment is increasingly outdated and communications are becoming less reliable.”

Admiral Kevin Lunday emphasized the importance of updating the air fleet, stating that the timing of this investment underscores the Coast Guard’s need to modernize. He mentioned that as maritime activities grow and national security challenges become more complex, having dependable air mobility is crucial for operational success.

It’s also worth mentioning that maintaining the previous jets cost nearly $10 million a year. Since the new aircraft took over in January 2025, they have faced unexpected maintenance issues, leading to several mission cancellations.

The Coast Guard, under the leadership of former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, moved forward with the procurement of a new C-37B long-range command and control aircraft from Gulfstream in June 2022. This aircraft’s primary function is to operate globally as a command platform for top leadership at DHS and the Coast Guard.

In 2021, a report noted that upkeep for long-range aircraft would be in the millions due to age and mileage. The costs were, as mentioned earlier, close to $10 million annually.
