If you combine the Sapphire Preferred and Freedom Unlimited, you’ll want to choose the right card for each purchase to maximize your points: Use the Sapphire Preferred for dining, online grocery orders, some streaming services, and travel. Then use the Freedom Unlimited for drugstore purchases and all other spending.
In total, you’ll earn 5 points per dollar on travel through the Chase portal, 2 points per dollar on all other travel, 3 points per dollar on restaurants, online grocery purchases, select streaming services and drugstore purchases, and 1.5 points per dollar on everything else.
As you earn points on Freedom Unlimited, you can move and consolidate them into Sapphire Preferred. With just a few clicks, the value of your Freedom Unlimited points instantly increases dramatically. Sapphire Preferred cardholders can also redeem their points at 1.25 cents per point through Chase’s travel portal or transfer them to travel partners like World of Hyatt, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines for even more value.
Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Freedom Flex
If you want a high base rewards rate, the Freedom Unlimited is a great choice, while the Freedom Flex is a good choice for those looking to make the most of the bonus categories. If you max out the card’s 5% quarterly bonus, you can earn an extra 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points each year.
You can also use the Freedom Flex for drugstore purchases and paying your cell phone bill to take advantage of the cell phone protection it comes with, while you’ll probably want to use the Sapphire Preferred for streaming services, online grocery shopping, and travel (especially reservations not booked through Chase Travel).
Unfortunately, when you combine these two cards, you’ll only earn 1% on purchases in non-bonus categories. This is the main drawback of combining the Freedom Flex with the Sapphire Preferred instead of the Freedom Unlimited. However, you could still come out ahead if you max out the 5% bonus categories. Also, keep in mind that there’s nothing stopping you from getting and combining all three of these cards to build a Chase Trifecta.
