Suella Braverman Shares Insights on Conservative Party’s Decline
Suella Braverman, a newcomer to the British Reform Party, provided her perspective on the Conservative Party’s decline during a press conference on Monday night. She stated, “It’s impossible to defend the party’s record in office, or even to believe in its future policies.”
Having switched from the Conservative Party to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party earlier that day, Braverman reflected on her political journey, noting her vote for Brexit in 2016 as a pivotal moment of rebellion against then-Prime Minister David Cameron. She expressed feelings of being “abused” by her former party and described how her attempts to steer it in a new direction led to personal and professional repercussions.
She mentioned, “I’ve been slandered and called an Islamophobe by Tory colleagues” for voicing concerns about gang raids and claiming that “multiculturalism has failed.” Furthermore, she alluded to her solitary efforts to address issues like immigration control, the European Convention on Human Rights, and shortcomings in law enforcement.
At the Reform Party headquarters, she remarked:
As Home Secretary, I urged the Prime Minister that hate marches should be banned, emphasizing that the Met was not serving the Jewish community well and that a two-tiered police system undermined public trust. I warned him that someone could be killed. My requests were dismissed, and I was subsequently fired for speaking out.
Fast forward two years, and we saw members of the Jewish community killed on the streets of Britain. The Conservative Party should feel ashamed. They fell victim to rampant anti-Semitism and complacent policing. At crucial times, my cabinet colleagues offered no support. Now, they express concern over two-tier policing and escalating extremism.
Defending the party’s record in office or believing in its future is, frankly, impossible. The people, instincts, and factions have not changed. It’s time to confront the reality of the Conservative Party’s situation. The right may have lost its influence within the Tory framework, but the centrists have gained dominance.
In recent years, I’ve felt aligned with a left-leaning social democratic faction that merely labels itself conservative. This leads me to the unfortunate conclusion that the Conservative Party no longer embodies true conservatism. They excel at superficial conservative gestures, yet when critical national decisions surface, they compromise.
During the press conference, a recurring theme emerged regarding skepticism about Braverman’s mental health, especially following her defection announcement. Although this narrative was retracted a few hours later, the fallout prompted criticism from various political figures. Farage described the situation as a “last-ditch effort for a dying political party.”
