The US cities where teachers are paid the least: analysis

(NEXSTAR) — Many teachers across the U.S. continue to face low pay, but in some metropolitan areas educators can be paid more than others.

The national average salary for public school teachers is expected to be $68,469 for the 2022-23 school year, according to the National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest teachers' union. Adjusted for inflation, the average has fallen 6.4% over the past 10 years, the NEA said in its annual report. Ranking and estimation report.

The average annual salary in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area is $73,153, but after taxes and cost of living, your adjusted take-home pay is $68,271. That amount is still higher than the rest of the country, according to a MoneyGeek report that ranks the metropolitan areas that offer the highest real incomes for educators.

The highest average salary listed in the top 15 is in New York City at $101,068, but the take-home pay drops to $57,781 after income taxes and cost of living are taken into account.

For K-12 educators looking to get the most out of their salary, Washington's Kennewick-Richland metropolitan area may be the ideal area. K-12 teachers earn the highest take-home pay, with an average of $60,822. Meanwhile, higher education teachers have the highest purchasing power in Las Cruces, New Mexico, with an average take-home pay of $84,429.

Of the 178 metropolitan areas analyzed by Money Geek, Hawaii's capital city had the worst teacher pay. The average annual salary for educators in Honolulu is $51,778, but they take home just $22,677.

Other cities where teachers earn less than $35,000 after taxes and living expenses include Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Prescott, Arizona.
