US Pressures Europe to Halt Russian Oil Imports

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration is urging European nations to cease purchasing Russian oil and to align with the proposed sanctions targeting Russia, a White House official shared on Tuesday.

A report from February by the Research Center on Energy and Clean Air highlighted that some European countries still depend on Russian energy, continuing to fuel its military despite a decline in trust following the extensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Countries like China, India, and Turkey account for nearly 75% of Russia’s fossil fuel sales, which totalled about $187.3 billion last year. In contrast, European countries spent around $25.5 billion on Russian fossil fuels in 2024. The US, notably, does not import Russian oil.

Interestingly, this means Europe spent more on Russian oil than it provided in financial aid to Ukraine, which was estimated at roughly $21.7 billion.

The proposal for US sanctions is on the table again, as President Trump re-evaluates the situation after weeks without progress in peace talks. However, officials noted that European allies need to be on board.

“The US hopes Europe will join in the sanctions with us and stop buying Russian oil,” the official indicated.

Andri Yermak, a top advisor to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, mentioned that he would discuss the necessity of European cooperation in sanctions during this week’s summit, expressing belief in American unity on such measures.

“I think it’s essential for the US to receive additional signals from Europe regarding these sanctions, and then they would quickly comply. I’m prepared to stop buying Russian oil,” he stated.

This push for European cooperation aligns with Trump’s expressed disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin following a summit intended for peace, as Trump affirmed his dedication to making a positive impact.

“I’m very disappointed in Putin. I’ll do something to help people live,” Trump told CNN’s Scott Jennings, stressing that it’s not just about Ukraine but about saving lives, pointing out that thousands are dying weekly.

In response to India’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil, Trump has even imposed 50% tariffs.

On another front, the US aims to enhance security assurances for Ukraine post-conflict, as noted by a senior White House source.

“We hope that Europeans will increase their support for Ukraine’s security and prosperity after the war,” the official commented.

This ongoing dialogue about potential security measures is part of the broader peace process, with continued efforts this week, according to Yermak.
