Lane Kiffin’s Viral Grocery Store Moment

New LSU football coach Lane Kiffin caught the internet’s attention this past weekend for a reason beyond the football field.

His daughter, Landry Kiffin, shared a TikTok video that quickly went viral, showing her bringing a grocery cart home. On ESPN’s Saturday night coverage of the Kinder-Texas Bowl—where LSU played against No. 21 Houston—Kiffin commented that he hadn’t authorized her to post the clip, adding that she did return the cart afterward.

Landry explained in the video that she took the basket because “you have to pay for the bag” at the grocery store.

During the broadcast, ESPN’s Cole Kubelik humorously acknowledged the video while handing out a plastic bag, prompting Kiffin to say, “First, Landry wasn’t supposed to post that.”

In the clip, Landry joked about her father’s shopping skills being questionable now, noting that he took the cart home after his first solo trip to the store.

“I didn’t have a bag,” Kiffin said regarding the self-checkout. “So I just put it in the cart. Then I left.”

He added, “I brought back a basket.” Landry further mentioned that she prides herself on being a “one-person self-checkout” expert.

Interestingly, Landry is dating LSU linebacker Whit Weeks, and she playfully remarked that her dad’s shopping privileges might have been revoked. She included in the video, “The first time I sent him to the store by himself, he took the basket home.”

When she questioned him about the bag, Kiffin explained, “How else am I supposed to transport it? They told me I had to pay for the bag at the self-checkout.”

While on ESPN, Kiffin also reflected on how social media can be a tool for recruiting players. “Maybe I need a little detox,” he mentioned, leading to a discussion about how much time his daughter spends online. She responded, “But that’s the world we live in.”

Kiffin noted that he often talks to new employees’ parents, who express familiarity because they follow him on social media. “It’s interesting, as it gives us a way to connect with families even when we can’t be there,” he said.

Although Kiffin was present during the bowl game, he didn’t coach LSU in their loss to Houston, as Frank Wilson took over as the interim coach after Brian Kelly was dismissed.

Kiffin’s move to LSU came after a prolonged period of speculation surrounding his coaching career. He recently signed a seven-year contract worth $13 million annually. Just two days following the Rebels’ Egg Bowl victory, Kiffin announced that he would be joining a rival SEC team.

This decision drew criticism from several Ole Miss players on social media, particularly regarding his claims of seeking permission from the government to coach through the College Football Playoff.

In his six seasons at Ole Miss, Kiffin achieved a notable 55-19 record.

Ole Miss has since elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach, as the team heads into the College Football Playoff quarterfinals against the Georgia Bulldogs this Thursday.
