“The View” co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin on Monday confronted Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz about his past claims that he was in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. I objected.
Mr. Walz has falsely claimed several times that he was in Hong Kong during the spring 1989 pro-democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square that left hundreds of people dead. Mr. Griffin called on Mr. Walz to clear these allegations and further questioned his own claims. This is what I would say to voters who are worried that there is a “trust problem” in politics today.
“I would like to ask you about the numerous misrepresentations you have made regarding your military history and travels,” Griffin began. “I want to be clear: No one lies more than Donald Trump, and nothing you've misled is on the same level. But there are so many in our politics. In a time when there's so much mistrust and so many lies, there can't be any gray areas, and how do you communicate to voters that you're concerned that there may be a trust issue?”
“Well, I think we need to be careful about this, whether or not there was a misstatement in Hong Kong 35 years ago in August 1989. People are going to label it as a pathological liar like Donald Trump. I think we make a distinction,” Walz said. “They let it out. But I think it's important to be careful how you speak. There's something about being a teacher and a coach and just speaking from your heart. I think I'm being honest and speaking in this moment…but I think the public recognizes this as just a ton of misinformation being put out there. That is important.”
The vice presidential candidate struggled during the October 1st vice presidential debate when he was asked about false claims about Hong Kong, and he said he traveled to China in the summer of 1989 and criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump's China policy. said. Veterans who served with Walz in an Army National Guard battalion accused him of abandoning them when they learned he would be deployed to Iraq in 2005. According to in response to a letter posted on Facebook in 2018. Vice President Kamala Harris' headquarters posted picture Walz said civilians should not own weapons he carried in war, but he did not serve in Iraq and was stationed in Italy during the war on terror.
Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, a former Marine who served in Iraq, called Walz's retirement allegations “a disgrace” at a press conference in August and accused him of “stolen courage.” did.
