Discussion on Trump and the 25th Amendment on “The View”
In a recent episode of “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg’s co-host raised the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump after his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. Goldberg commented that, rather than laughing, other nations are genuinely concerned about the United States.
Critiquing Trump’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Goldberg expressed that he missed opportunities for meaningful engagement, saying, “He has had a chance to get far more opportunities than he offered them, and they don’t think they’re serious anymore. I’m worried. Correction, 20-.” The co-hosts were puzzled by the mention of “20,” and after a few hesitations, co-host Sunny Hostin clarified it was about the 25th Amendment.
Goldberg wasn’t shy about turning the criticism back on Biden, stating that if Biden behaved similarly, she would have suggested he needed assistance. She insisted, “If Biden were acting like this, I would have said I was taking him somewhere and sitting there, but this wasn’t. This wasn’t the president, this was useless.”
The 25th Amendment outlines the procedures for presidential succession and power transfer if a president cannot fulfill their duties, whether due to incapacitation or death. Hostin further argued that the UN’s actions in trying to end wars were not sincere and suggested they were aiming for a Nobel Peace Prize amidst the turmoil, prompting a debate over whether Trump could be a deserving candidate for such an award regarding the Ukraine-Russia situation.
Unlike her co-hosts, Alyssa Farah Griffin supported Trump’s efforts regarding Ukraine, saying that if he could achieve peace, then perhaps he should be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Goldberg expressed deeper concerns about the repercussions of Trump’s leadership on global perceptions, highlighting a prevailing anxiety among allies regarding the US’s standing. Hostin chimed in, noting a significant portion of the American populace — about 76% — believes Trump doesn’t deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, emphasizing that even his own countrymen feel this way. She appeared to reference a recent poll survey that echoed this sentiment.
