“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin recently tried to argue that “white privilege” and “beauty privilege” are the main reasons why Indiana Fever basketball star Kaitlyn Clark has become so popular.

“I do think there’s beauty privilege. There’s white privilege. There’s tall privilege and we have to acknowledge that. And part of it is about race, because when you think about the Britney Griners of the world, why did she have to play in Russia? Because they didn’t pay her,” Hostin said of the WNBA.
The View co-hosts were discussing claims by former ESPN commentator Jemele Hill that Clark is popular only because of his race and looks.
Earlier in the discussion, Hostin added that she has no problem with Clarke boosting the popularity of the WNBA.
“Kaitlin Clark will bring money and sponsorship to the league and hopefully other players will benefit from that. But because she’s white and attractive, I think more people will be able to relate to her. Unfortunately, there is still prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community. The WNBA is 70 percent black. A third of the players are from the LGBTQ+ community and we have to do something about that in this country. People have a problem with lesbian women playing basketball. Who cares? They’re great athletes,” she said.
Co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin responded by saying she became a big WNBA fan because Clark was “so much fun to watch,” and noted it had nothing to do with skin color.
Whoopi Goldberg, the show’s other co-host, also emphasized that she and Hostin have tried to bring attention to the WNBA over the past few years.
“These women are often just as good as, and sometimes even better than, the people you see,” she added.
“Sometimes better than the guys!” Hostin asserted.
Goldberg also echoed Hill’s comments, saying Clark is getting attention simply because she’s a great athlete.
“It’s a shame that her record was so low-balled because that’s her record,” Goldberg said, pointing to the notecard, “Unless you show someone who has a better record, that’s why she’s getting attention. She’s a really good player and it doesn’t matter if she’s straight or gay. Nobody’s gonna cry when she hits the ball like that.”
Meanwhile, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy fired back at Hostin on social media, accusing her of being plain racist.
Regarding X, Portnoy Mail Sports She posted an article about Hostin’s comments, writing, “Someone tell this racist that all these players are superstars and white and no one cared until Kaitlyn Clark came along. That’s the way she plays.”
He then listed other superstar basketball players who are also white and play in the WNBA: “Dianna Turassi, Paige Bucketts, Cameron Brink, Sue Bird, Ella Delle Donne, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Kelsey Plum.”
Clark is considered one of the greatest women’s college basketball players of all time, especially after four historic seasons at the University of Iowa.
During her collegiate career, she became the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s all-time scoring leader.
Clark’s Indiana Fever is 0-5 to start the season, and Clark is credited with bringing in a record $2 million in ticket revenue for last weekend’s game against the New York Liberty.
