Kamala Harris has a long digital history (a so-called “paper trail”) that portrays her as an ultra-liberal.
That’s not surprising: For much of her career, from prosecutor to state attorney general to senator, she had to appeal almost exclusively to the left-leaning voter base in heavily Democratic California.
But at some point, Harris, the Democratic candidate, will have to explain or excuse some of her past positions, which will hurt her in a close national election in which a series of polls show her statistically tied with Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, and with a 6-point lead in Minnesota.
Some of Harris’ most liberal comments have surfaced since the Trump campaign called her “lazy” and bragged about mispronouncing her name. But the mainstream media has been quick to point out that she is a “slacker” and that she is a “slacker.” Andrew Sullivan calls. “Amnesia,” he wrote, adding that while Harris could win, she is “one of the weakest and most woke Democratic candidates, and after her far-left stances she cannot credibly appeal to the center.”

So that’s the VP’s challenge if her honeymoon with Harris ends. If so, she has to explain to voters why she’s no longer running for those positions. Maybe it’s because she’s “evolved.” Maybe it’s because she represented mostly San Francisco at the time. Maybe her time as VP changed her perspective. But she can’t just ignore it.
Even the sympathetic press will eventually emerge from its amnesia.
For example: During the BLM riots following the killing of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, Harris helped set up a bail fund to free criminals from jail.
“They’re not going to let up, and they shouldn’t let up, and we shouldn’t let up either,” she said in an interview.
“The idea that more police officers will make us safer is outdated, it’s actually false and it’s outdated,” Harris said in a separate interview.
And during the 2020 campaign, she said, “Private prisons profit from human incarceration and suffering. One of my first tasks as president will be to begin phasing out jails and private prisons.”
During the same campaign, Ms Harris supported “Medicare for All,” a Bernie pet plan, but acknowledged that it would eliminate private health insurance. Joe Biden has refused to go that far to the left.
Harris also promised to ban fracking, but then backed off after aides said she would.
Historian who predicted nearly every election since 1984 talks about Trump vs. Harris showdown
When the media instantly switched their support from Biden (who can of course serve another four years!) to Harris (she’s a young, fresh voice!), they quickly formed a guard.
Several major news outlets have tried to dispel the idea that Harris was ever nominated for border secretary, with Axios reporting in the most embarrassing case that “the Trump campaign and Republicans have repeatedly given Harris the title of ‘border secretary,’ even though she never actually held that title.”
However, in 2021, Axios reported: “Harris has been nominated by Biden to be border secretary…”
(Axios has updated the story.)
Sure, that was journalistic shorthand, and Harris was appointed to address the root causes of illegal immigration and work diplomatically with Mexico and Guatemala, but why deny that she held that unofficial title?
Those calling the vice president a DEI pick justify it by saying Biden was essentially promising to pick a Black woman.
One guest on FOX Business went even further by comparing Harris to Hawk Tua’s girl (sex acts involved, Google it if you have to).
Meanwhile, Trump has accused Harris (who has no running against him) of plotting a “coup” and said Jews should have their heads checked if they vote Democrat (Kamala, of course, is married to a Jewish man).

The former president may have lowered expectations by calling Harris “stupid as a stone” given her near-flawless performance during her first week in office.
It seems Trump is still trying to work out how to compete against the 59-year-old Harris. (The Washington Post Here’s a lovely TikTok that depicts how Donna Brazile and other allies have been planning for weeks for Kamala to run in case Biden backs out.
Now compare that to the way the media treats J.D. Vance, where no statement, no matter how old, is considered too small to be resurrected.
The Harris campaign has tried to portray both Trump and Vance as nutjobs, citing his “bizarre and extreme views” in their statement. The Trump campaign is trying to portray Harris as a nutjob. Overall, very strange.
Kamala is riding a wave of positive press, but skeptics see it as a risky choice
Vance’s biggest controversy came in a 2021 interview with Fox, when he singled out Harris and others by name, saying “childless, cat-loving women” have no “direct stake” in society and that their lives are miserable — a comment he has extended to include childless media workers.
The remarks landed him in a spat with Jennifer Aniston and, never a good thing, earned him a rebuke from the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal.
Initially, the Ohio senator told Megyn Kelly that he was just being sarcastic and that he loves cats.
On Sunday, Fox host and former Republican congressman Trey Gowdy told Vance that George Washington and James Madison were among those who had no biological children.
“You look at what the left has done,” Vance said. “They’ve fundamentally taken this out of context and, in fact, actively lied about what I said. Trey, what I think is true — and this goes to the heart of what I was saying in that comment three years ago and will continue to say — is that the left has become increasingly and explicitly anti-children and anti-family.”

“They’ve been encouraging young families not to have children because of concerns about climate change. They’ve been suggesting that people who have children are somehow selfish, but I think becoming a parent is actually the most altruistic act and it’s also really perspective-changing.”
“So this is not a criticism. Trey, this is not a criticism of all childfree people.”
Harris has been deeply involved in raising her husband Doug Emhoff’s children, according to a statement from Doug’s ex-wife.
This is surely the strangest election campaign in American history, and it could well change perceptions of strangeness. But given the media consensus that Trump is a danger to democracy, there seems to be a double standard.

footnote: While President Trump has so far declined to debate Harris and claims he hasn’t yet decided who his nominee will be, there’s one thing to remember.
Trump negotiated these terms with Joe Biden and accepted Biden’s terms. With Harris suddenly becoming the new candidate, Trump is perfectly within his rights to renegotiate with her. After Trump rejected ABC as biased, Fox News offered to host a debate in September. It’s unclear if the debate will happen, but the former president is perfectly within his rights to work out a new agreement.
Incidentally, it was Biden who insisted on an early debate with Trump to spice up the race. That was the beginning of the end. Knowing what we know now, why did his team send him there?
