He also did not mention Democrats’ support for cutting police budgets and sex-reassignment surgery for children.
In an interview, Aaron Sorkin said: The West Wing How will it be received by today’s audience?
“But at this point, it’s impossible for the Republicans, the opposition party, to be rational,” he said. “People are going to watch that and it’s going to feel foreign to the country they live in. On the show, the Republicans were in opposition, but the Republicans they were dealing with were rational.”
The series, which aired from 1999 to 2006, depicted a Democratic presidential administration and starred Martin Sheen as fictional President Josiah Bartlet.
Since then, the show has remained an object of sentimental affection for many Democrats. For some, it’s more than that, a kind of fanboy role-play fantasy that indirectly allows left-leaning DC fans to fulfill their dreams of becoming one of Sorkin’s upstanding Democrat characters.
One of The West WingThe most memorable Republican character in is Ainsley Hayes (played by Emily Proctor), a lawyer and pundit who leaves the party to join President Bartlet’s administration as White House Counsel. To many non-left-leaning viewers, Ainsley Hayes epitomized Sorkin’s vision of a “good” Republican, as she often opposed her own party on “principle,” with the implication that the only “decent” Republicans are Democrats.
