Whale Shark Almost Swallows Snorkeler in the Philippines
On August 3, a snorkeler in Cebu, Philippines, had quite an unexpected encounter when a whale shark collided with him, its mouth wide open. It’s worth noting that whale sharks, despite their impressive size, generally feed by filtering and are not a danger to people.
Speaking of the ocean, the soon-to-be-released film “Whale Fall,” set to hit theaters in 2026, is based on a book by Daniel Krauss published in 2023. The film explores the story of a man swallowed by a sperm whale while scuba diving. It seems, maybe, this could evoke some fresh fears about ocean life for viewers.
It’s amusing when you think back to “Jaws,” which really left its mark on how we view the sea. That movie came out way back in 1975, and yet, the fear it instilled still lingers today. Fascinating, right?
The trailer for “Whale Fall” just came out from 20th Century Studios, and honestly, it sparks curiosity. There are some expectations to fulfill, particularly seeing Austin Abrams doing his best attempt at creating memorable moments.
I would say I’m quite captivated by sperm whales. They’ve certainly outgrown any juvenile jokes attached to their names and have carved out a reputation as some of the ocean’s most underrated creatures. Remember Moby Dick? That infamous sperm whale drove Captain Ahab to madness, which is kind of incredible when you think about it.
I find it wild that real sperm whales engage in a sort of battle against giant squid. What is that all about? There’s definitely a unique rivalry there, like the ocean’s own version of the Hatfields and McCoys.
But, just think about the scenario depicted in the trailer where someone is actually swallowed by one of these immense animals. That’s a surreal thought; imagine the feelings of claustrophobia in such a confined space. Your initial fear of the ocean might just fade away, only to be replaced by the sinking realization that you’re trapped.
Still, I think I might check out this movie when it comes out on October 16th. It also features Josh Brolin, which adds some star power to it. Who knows, it could be quite a ride!
