Trump’s Proposed Arch Sparks Debate

The White House is responding to concerns about President Donald Trump’s potential plans for a new arch, inspired by Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. Critics worry that it might overshadow Washington’s iconic skyline.

According to a Saturday report from The Washington Post, Trump is contemplating the installation of a 250-foot tall arch overlooking the Potomac River, situated between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. This structure is meant to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, experts cited in the article argue that such an arch could block views of nearby monuments.

In a social media post on Sunday, White House communications director Stephen Chan remarked, “The ‘experts’ who think ‘too big’ are used to allowing things to be small.” It seems there’s a confidence here, maybe a bit of defiance too?

The White House has not specified the arch’s precise dimensions, but they believe it would serve as a significant landmark within the capital. Press Secretary David Ingle stated, “The Arch will become one of the most iconic landmarks, not just in Washington, D.C., but around the world.” He went on to emphasize that Trump’s vision is woven into America’s fabric and will resonate for generations.

While President Trump sidestepped questions about the exact size of the arch when speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he did express a desire for a grand structure. He mentioned, “I hope this is the biggest one. We are the largest and most powerful nation.” So, there’s definitely a theme of scale in his thinking.

Initially considering smaller arches, Trump appears to favor the larger design due to its impressive stature—allowing for a “250-250” match for the anniversary.

Art critic Catesby Leigh, who had previously supported a smaller arch, noted to the Post, “I don’t think there’s an arch out there that big.”

Interestingly, the proposed 250-foot height would overshadow other notable buildings in the area. For context, the White House stands at around 70 feet, while the Lincoln Memorial reaches approximately 100 feet.

This arch initiative, which Trump has been promoting since late 2025, is just one among several projects under his administration. Others include the construction of a new White House ballroom and the renovation of the White House Rose Garden.
