Supercow Viatina-19 FIV Mara Mauvais currently holds the world record for the most expensive cow sold at auction.

According to Guinness World Records, Mara was sold in Brazil on July 1, 2023, for $4.2 million. Her sale price is three times that of the previous record holder.

She weighs more than 2,400 pounds (1,100 kilograms), twice the average weight of an adult dog of her breed.

In Brazil, the livestock industry is a major source of cash flow for the country’s economy, and the country is the world’s largest exporter of beef.

Valued at $4 million, the cow is the result of years of careful breeding.

At high-price, high-profile cattle auctions, the winning cows become the target of pooled investments from wealthy ranchers, who draw the genetic lottery by harvesting eggs and sperm from the champion cows.

The goal of these tactics is to create embryos that will be implanted into surrogate mothers in the hopes of giving birth to the next generation of super cows.

“We’re not slaughtering luxury cattle, we’re breeding them and ultimately feeding the world,” said Ney Pereira, one of Viatina’s owners. AP News“I think Viatina can provide that.”

According to veterinarian Loranie Martins, Pereira’s daughter, the huge sum is based on a trifecta of three desirable traits: rapid muscle growth, exceptional fertility and the ability to consistently pass those traits on to calves.

In addition, other factors include the cow’s value posture, hoof firmness, docility, maternal ability and beauty.

Martins also said breeders were willing to pay a staggering $250,000 to harvest Beatina 19’s egg cells.

“She’s the closest thing to perfection that’s ever been achieved,” Martins said. “She’s the perfect cow and has all the characteristics that every owner wants.”

Beef cattle are priced at $2,500-3,000 and are raised for meat production, while dairy cattle are estimated to cost between $900-3,000 and are raised for milk production.
