Several fans attending a theater performance experienced health issues while enduring sweltering temperatures to see Rachel Zegler from the outdoor balcony during the West End production of “Evita.”
More than 200 eager fans waited outside the London Palladium for hours in nearly 90-degree heat. Zegler, who gained attention from Disney’s live-action “Snow White,” performed “Don’t Cry for Me” as part of the musical, at no charge according to reports.
However, not all attendees were able to meet the performers.
Emergency services received a call around 8:16 PM about people feeling unwell on Argyle Street in central London.
Two ambulance teams were dispatched to the venue, where Zegler had just made her West End debut a few days prior.
While assisting one individual, the team was alerted to another needing help nearby. One person was transported to the hospital, while the other received medical advice and left the scene.
Zegler shared some Instagram posts from audience members who enjoyed her performance, but she hasn’t made any public remarks regarding those who fell ill while waiting.
One source mentioned that crowd control is already challenging on public streets, and the heat adds to the risk.
This incident has added to the ongoing discussions about the production.
At the start of Act II, Zegler, portraying the former Argentine first lady, Eva Perón, sings “Argentina’s Never Cry” from a balcony overlooking the streets, which frustrated some fans who paid a premium to watch her perform inside.
These creative choices have drawn comments, particularly since director Jamie Lloyd is known for his non-traditional staging.
One fan expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s a bit unfair—paid for tickets but didn’t get to see the full performance.” Others, however, support the decision, arguing it’s fitting for a character focused on empowerment to sing from a balcony.
The musical, based on the book and lyrics by Tim Rice and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, originally debuted on Broadway in 1979. The London revival officially launched on July 1st and will run for a limited 12-week engagement.
