Giants Tight End Theo Johnson Q&A

Theo Johnson discusses his mindset and experiences with a Post columnist.

Q: How would you describe your mentality on the field?

A: I aim to be explosive and intense, but also smart and strategic. I want defenders to feel the pressure of facing me in both the run and passing game.

Q: Can you share an example of your intensity?

A: If there’s a safety standing flat-footed ten yards away, I’d want to run right through him. It’s not about offensive pass interference; it’s about making a statement. If you’re flat-footed, you’re not respecting me. It feels rude.

Q: Do you believe in the threats of the game?

A: Absolutely. Soccer is tough, and some players just can’t handle the physicality.

Q: What’s an example of your strength, physically or mentally?

A: It’s crucial for me to push through, even when I don’t feel like it. July isn’t exactly training camp weather.

Q: How does your style compare to Kam Skatebo?

A: I think about players like Scutt and Jackson. It’s not always pretty; sometimes it’s gritty, but we get the job done and gain those tough yards. That’s hard-nosed football.

Q: You mentioned your mother on Instagram, saying she believed in you when no one else did.

A: I struggled with self-doubt as a kid. My mother was tough on me but she always believed I could achieve more when I didn’t see it. I owe so much to her support, and without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Q: Your mother faced domestic violence. Have you ever sought therapy because of your family’s struggles?

A: Yes, but it took some time to find it useful. Initially, I didn’t engage with it. It wasn’t until I realized I wanted to improve that I started to see the benefits.

Q: Did your therapy help in managing your anger?

A: I’ve never had anger issues, honestly.

Q: What did you learn about yourself through therapy?

A: I learned the importance of giving myself grace. I push for perfection but realize it’s okay not to be okay sometimes. It’s about finding healthier ways to handle my feelings.

Q: What are your feelings toward your father?

A: Honestly, I don’t have many feelings about him. I don’t recall much from my childhood; it’s better not to carry negativity from those early years.

Q: Does your mother come to your games?

A: Yes, she’s been to a couple of games this season.

Q: What’s it like to play in New York?

A: I genuinely love it. The fans are incredibly passionate and it’s just a great energy here. The city has a vibe that matches my excitement for the game.

Q: What do you think about being drafted in the fourth round from Penn State?

A: I definitely carry a chip on my shoulder about it. I think about those who were chosen before me.

Q: Do you keep track of their performances?

A: Not obsessively, but I notice how they’re doing.

Q: Did you anticipate going higher in the draft?

A: We had a draft party for the second day, thinking something would happen then.

Q: Are you a trash talker on the field?

A: Not usually, but if the moment strikes, I can get caught up in the heat of it.

Q: What would you say after making a big play?

A: I’d probably let them know it’s going to be a long day for them.

Q: Who do you admire in the NFL?

A: Definitely George Kittle. I also looked up to Gronk and Gonzalez. Those guys can do it all, and I see a bit of myself in that versatility.

Q: What do you think of Mark Bavaro?

A: I’ve heard he’s the best tight end for the Giants, a true force on the field.

Q: What do you think after watching his highlights?

A: Just wow, that guy had strength.

Q: If you could block any defender in history, who would it be?

A: I’d pick Troy Polamalu. He brought such energy to the game, and he was my first NFL jersey.

Q: What are your thoughts on James Franklin being fired from Penn State?

A: It’s tough. He contributed to building a strong team culture and was respected for how he handled players personally.

Q: What did you enjoy at Emilios Ballat?

A: (laughs) I had a little of everything, but the veal parmesan was amazing.

Q: If you could invite three guests to dinner, who would they be?

A: Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Drake.

Q: What’s your favorite movie?

A: “Interstellar”.

Q: Favorite actress?

A: Jennifer Lawrence has always been a favorite of mine.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Lamb gyro.

Q: What do you think about the Giants-Eagles rivalry?

A: It’s been ongoing for years. The fans are pretty intense on both sides, and I know there’s a lot at stake when we play against them.

Q: How determined are you to help the Giants improve?

A: It’s what I focus on daily. I constantly think about how I can contribute to the wins, and I reflect on my role in losses.

Q: Any message for Giants fans?

A: We’re not where we want to be yet, but there’s still a lot to be excited about.

Q: How close is your team to succeeding?

A: Anyone who watches can see we’re just a few plays away from a very different outcome.

Q: What are you most proud of in your life now?

A: Being a supportive brother is what I take the most pride in. I’ve worked hard to get to a point where I can help my family.

Q: Describe your mother, Amy.

A: Selfless is probably the best word for her. She always prioritized her children and worked incredibly hard, especially while raising six of us. Watching her succeed in school and life while providing for us was immense, and it motivates all of us to do well.

Q: Does her survival of domestic violence motivate you?

A: Yes, she always encouraged me to push through challenges. I’ve seen how hard she fought for us, and it drives me to achieve my goals with everything I have.

Q: How proud is she of your success?

A: I think she’s very proud. I can see it in her eyes, especially before games. It’s a great feeling to know how far we’ve come.

Q: What motivates you the most?

A: I want to support my family and maximize my potential. I don’t want to look back and regret not having done my best.
