Trump Defends National Guard Deployment in D.C.

President Trump recently spoke out in support of deploying the National Guard to urban areas, particularly in Washington, D.C., to address crime issues. His remarks came in response to critical liberal media narratives and accusations from Democrats branding him as a “dictator.”

After positioning over 2,000 National Guard troops in the capital—some from other Republican-led states—Trump insisted that his decision was genuinely aimed at making the city safer, especially given its troubling homicide rate.

Additionally, Trump is contemplating sending the National Guard to other high-crime areas, including Chicago, where he has faced further criticism from Democratic officials.

On Sunday, the troops were seen carrying holstered weapons for their own protection, following authorization from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The following day, Trump commented on the backlash he faced during a press event in the Oval Office.

“They say, ‘We don’t need him. Freedom! Freedom! He’s a dictator!’” he quipped, mocking his critics. He continued to mimic his supporters, saying, “Then a lot of people are saying, ‘maybe we’d like a dictator.’” Trump emphasized that he does not desire to be a dictator, claiming, “I’m a man with great common sense.”

He expressed hope that Democratic leaders in crime-stricken areas like Chicago “get smart,” suggesting it would be beneficial for the nation.

Vice President J.D. Vance also weighed in, expressing his discontent with Democratic leaders’ responses to the National Guard’s deployment.

“They’re angrier about the fact the president is offering to help them get their crime under control than about murderers running rampant in their cities,” Vance noted.
