These major US bridges fell after being struck by ships and barges

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning and fell into the river below. From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses due to ship or barge collisions around the world, resulting in a total of 342 deaths, according to a 2018 report by the World Water Transport Infrastructure Association. Eighteen of the collapses occurred in the United States.

March 20, 2009: A vessel pushing eight barges crashes into the Popps Ferry Bridge in Biloxi, Mississippi, causing a 150-foot section of the bridge to collapse into the bay.

Interstate 40 Bridge: 14 dead

May 26, 2002: A barge crashes into the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, causing a 500-foot section of the road to collapse and plunging the vehicle into the water. 14 people were killed and 11 injured.

Queen Isabella Causeway: 8 people killed

September 15, 2001: A tugboat and barge collide with the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing the center section of the bridge to fall 80 feet into the bay below. A driver crashed into a hole, killing eight people.

Easebridge: 50 people injured

April 14, 1998: The Ann Holley towboat, traveling in St. Louis Harbor, collided with the center span of the Eads Bridge. Eight barges broke away. Three of them collided with a gambling boat permanently stationed under the bridge. 50 people suffered minor injuries.

Big Bayou Can’t: 47 Dead

September 22, 1993: In heavy fog, a barge being pushed by a tugboat collides with the Big Bayou Cannot Railroad Bridge near Mobile, Alabama and is swept away. Minutes later, an Amtrak train carrying 220 people reached the shifted bridge and derailed, killing 47 and injuring 103.

Seaver Bridge: 1 death

May 28, 1993: The tugboat Chris, pushing empty hopper barge DM3021, struck the support strata of the Judge William Seaver Bridge in New Orleans. Two spans and her two column vents collapsed onto the barge. Two cars carrying three people fell into the canal along with the deck of a four-lane bridge. One person was killed and two were seriously injured.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge: 35 dead

May 9, 1980: The 609-foot cargo ship Summit Venture was navigating the narrow, winding waterways of Tampa Bay, Florida, when a sudden, blinding squall knocked out the ship’s radar. The ship tore off the support of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, causing a 1,400-foot section of concrete road to fall during the morning rush hour. Seven vehicles, including a bus with 26 people on board, fell to a depth of 40 feet. 35 people died.
