Samsung’s Smart Fridge Issues
Imagine a fridge that’s more like a high-tech gadget than a simple appliance. That’s what Samsung’s new smart fridges are promoting. With these fridges, you can peek inside right from a 32-inch screen or your phone. Pretty cool, right?
However, it turns out that this massive smart device, standing six feet tall, requires a constant internet connection along with regular software updates. It seems that when some users went to open their fridges just before a holiday, they found them nonfunctional, much to their dismay.
Reports from South Korean outlet Star News indicated that many users were greeted with blank screens or messages like “Checking SmartThings app during update” or “offline.” Standard fridges typically remain silent. But for those with smart fridges, the absence of any display lights meant their food was, well, getting warm.
To add insult to injury, some fridges reportedly lost all their cold air. Talk about a recipe for disaster, especially just before a major holiday in South Korea!
The affected units were mostly the Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door refrigerators released in 2024 or later, which are touted for using AI to track food contents and suggest recipes. Reviewers praised some features, like tracking expiration dates to save time and reduce waste.
One user even mentioned how easy meal planning became with a quick glance at the fridge’s screen. And let’s not forget the ability to watch videos or listen to music right there on the fridge!
However, when customers sought help from Samsung, some were met with a lack of support, as reportedly, employees were unavailable for immediate assistance. Following the outcry, Samsung stated they had activated an emergency protocol and that service centers were addressing the situation.
They clarified that the issue was restricted to Korea and had not affected markets outside the country. The company explained that the problems arose due to an error during internal testing related to a software update, which they suspended upon learning about the issues.
This incident unfolded just before the Chuseok holiday, leaving many with spoiled food right when they needed their fridges the most.
